You are standing outside your apartment building in a suit like the assassins on television wear. Now, with your new job, even this familiar spot seems hostile now. You get the feeling that there are people spying on you, watching you, ready to call up the police and turn you in at any moment. You tell yourself it’s all just in your head, but the thoughts keep coming back. Nervously checking your watch, you begin to curse Harvey under your breath, telling him to hurry up. A few minutes later, Harvey rolls up to the building in his car. He reaches over and swings the door open for you. “Jump in, bud,” he says.
You slide into the awaiting seat. Harvey starts laughing to himself. “Nice suit,” he snickers. “You trying to impress a girl or something?”
Ignoring his statement, you ask, “You have my equipment, right?”
Harvey tosses you a black bag. “Yeah, everything’s there. A silenced Glock and some ammunition, a combat knife, a stiletto, a lock pick set, piano wire, binoculars, a bottle of ether and a vial of cyanide, some syringes, ya know, for the cyanide, and washcloth for the ether, um…is that it?
You rummage through the bag each item that he mentioned was in there, each one in an individual black pouch. “No, I think you listed everything,” you say.
“Good,” replies Harvey. “Now, each weapon should be used at different times according to the situation. If you’re up close to the enemy, use the piano wire or a knife if you must. If you are at a distance, use the Glock. You shouldn’t use the gun unless you need to pick off the target at a distance. Even with a silencer, the gun will still make noise and you don’t want to alert anyone. They’re also messy. I mean, if you need to use it, that’s fine. Just be careful.
“Now, there are three things to remember about killing: The first is to keep a low profile. Just blend in with the surroundings. Don’t make a lot of noise or act suspicious, and don’t be caught in a place you shouldn’t be. Also, always be on the offensive. There's nothing more dangerous than trying to fend off someone. That’s how you get killed. And finally, don’t leave any traces. You don’t want to let some blood splatter tip off a guard in the area or let some discarded stuff give away your identity. And don’t leave any witnesses. Ya got all that?”
“I think so. It’s a lot to remember.”
“You’ll do fine. It’s not so hard.” He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small flesh-colored object. Handing it to you, he says, “Put this in your ear. I’ll talk to you through it and give you advice.”
“You aren’t going in with me?”
“Nothing’s better than doing it on your own.” He throws a folder into your lap. “Here, study this. Look at his picture, read the profile. Information is important. It’ll give you an edge.
