You are Will, an experienced "spacer" who explores the galaxy for a living. It is a well-known fact that 95% of the Milky Way is unexplored, and your ship, the Pathfinder, is fast and well-provisioned for long trips into deep space. You make most of your money selling astronomical, geological, and zoological data from uncharted systems to interested parties, like mining companies looking for ores or pioneers looking for a nice green world to settle down on. The money is good, but the job is extremely dangerous. In addition to harsh environments and unknown plants and animals, you have to contend with the half-wild space marauders who would love to kill you and steal your expensive ship. It takes someone brave, self-sufficient, and above all, clever to do what you do.
Right now you are on your way back from a long scouting voyage. You haven't showered or shaved in weeks, and you've been eating nothing but surplus rations and alien meat, but you are about to get paid, and that's always worth the wait. Your black hair is long and messy, and so is your month-old beard. Your well-worn clothing hides a lean and athletic body, hardened by the rough life you lead.
