Trevor leaves to go watch the seniors, but Emily stays behind. "You've got that gleam in your eye that says you have an idea. What is it?"
"Just a glimmering so far, but I was thinking of a time machine."
"That sounds pretty advanced. Are you sure you can get it done in one semester?"
That is a problem. You'd really like to be the kid who invented the time machine in four months, but that makes time an even more important factor. "It may take longer than that."
"Would you consider a collaboration? I think we can speed up both our projects by working together."
"Your idea is intriguing. Continue, please."
She takes out her notebook and opens it. A complex system with several diagrams is laid out before you; it may take some time to fully assimilate. "I did my pre-work before we started, and even have some of the theoretical work started. I figured if I could cross-map my cerebral cortex with somebody else's, it would result in at least doubling the brainpower of both people. The only trick is that there would be potentially damaging feedback if they weren't at close in intelligence."
"Potentially damaging? How bad?"
"Well, it could reduce your IQ to that of a normal teenager, which means somewhere between the IQ of a baseball and an apple pie. You wouldn't necessarily drool, but you'd still be an idiot. But there's only a small chance of that happening, and it might only be temporary. What do you think?"
