After packing a satchel of food, readying your armor and making sure your weapons were sharpened, you set off on horseback, riding through the city of Tiryns and eventually out on the open road, where you traveled along the green hills and rocky plains of Argolis for many days and nights, contemplating how to defeat an enemy that was invulnerable to all manner of weapons.

Perhaps if you fired an arrow in its mouth? Maybe if you tied sharp pebbles to your knuckles and beat it to death? Probably if you just crushed it with a giant rock, though then Eurystheus might not recognize the lion and instead choose to declare your quest a failure.

On the third day, the road was blocked as a young shepherd had to transport his entire flock of sheep across the road. To pass the time, you chatted for a while, and he was kind enough to ask where you were going. After explaining your mission to slay the lion, his eyes suddenly grew wide.


"The Nemean lion? Turn back, man. That lion is a fiend from out of this world. It kidnaps women and devours them in its lair. Then when some brave fool comes to save the maiden, it's ready and waiting for him.".

While appreciating his concern, you were sworn to Eurystheus, and demanded to know where the lion could be found.
