Against your intuition, you go with the left fork, figuring that it will lead you out of the forest. Your feet begin to blister and bleed, and you slow down to a walk as you begin to tire. The forest continues to thin. Many of the trees and bushes are brown or bare. The earth is hard-packed and dry. The sky is a brittle, clear blue. Up ahead, you see a cottage off to the side of the path, which widens at that point to become a dirt road. In the yard of the cottage, someone is carving a log with a chisel.
