"She just walked in," Maria says. "Josie, your mom is worried. Want to talk to her?" You nod and Maria hands you the phone.

"Hi, Mom," you say.

"Thank God you're OK!" Mom says. "When school called and said you didn't show up for the second day in a row, and I paged all your favorite stores in the mall and didn't hear back, I really started to freak. I figured if you ditched you'd be shopping or at least window shopping."

"I went for a walk in the woods," you tell her. "I think I'll stay at Maria's. Give Colin my love."

"Wait.. you mean, like, for good?!" your mom gasps.

"Yep," you say. "You and Colin are welcome to come by any time."

"What about Alex?" Mom says.

"Give the perverted little fuckhead a punch in the nose and cut his balls off for me," you growl. "I'm not stepping foot in the house again until he's left town for good."

"What the hell?!" Mom gasps.

"While you're at it, confiscate his cell-phone camera and break both his arms," you snap. "The slimeball has been spying on me, taking surreptitious pictures of me, and last night he tied me up and assaulted me."

"WHAT?!" Mom roars.

"You heard me," you reply.

"Call the police," Mom snaps. "Tell them I'm about to murder my younger son." The line goes dead in your ear.

You hang up the phone, shaking some. Maria gives you a soft smile. "So that's what happened," she says. "Come here." She cradles you in her arms.
