"Forgive me, Lord Ferr," Dez said, heading for the open archway into the castle. "I'm in the middle of something. Find me later, please?" He didn't wait for the venerable mage to answer, but practically ran up the wide entranceway steps and into the cool, shadowy castle corridors. Zeth was stalking across the great circular foyer, his angry footsteps ringing out against the shiny marble.

Dez followed him, not into the dining hall, where the rest of the congregate were gathered, but down the long hall lined with private suites where they would retire to rest after the conference. Most of the doors were closed and locked, already claimed by the mages who had arrived earlier, their names magically inscribed in silver on the dark red wood.

"Zeth," Dez hissed, "wait, damn it." The young mage ignored him and disappeared through the first open door he came to. Dez ran, but the door banged shut before he could get there. Coming to a stop, he sighed and leaned his forehead against the wood. "Zeth, I'm sorry for trying to intimidate you. It was stupid, but I assure you, my intentions are honorable."

"Go away," Zeth growled through the door and Dez listened to the sound of his footsteps walking away. Taking a step back, he glanced up and down the hall, but everyone else was in the dining hall, apparently. Dez paced a small circle before the door, chewing on his lip as he tried to decide what to do.
