"Me? I'm Jesse," he says. "At least, that's what I call myself now. I don't really remember who I used to be before the attack."
"Attack?" you repeat, not sure which is more unsettling--that you don't remember an attack, or that you can't remember your name. "Why can't I remember?"
"I don't know," Jesse says. "None of us can. Not much, anyway. Bits and pieces might come back as the sedative wears off, but it seems like the memory loss is permanent. From what we've pieced together, there was a chemical or biological attack on the country. We don't know who did it, but it killed a lot of people, and some of the people it didn't kill mutated into humanoid animals. We've been calling ourselves 'furries'. The normal humans call us freaks and monsters and they've decided we're not fit to live in their society. That's why we were brought here."
"Where is here?" you ask.
"Beats me," Jesse says. "We were told this is one of many 'preserves' set up for our own protection, but it's really just a prison, an internment camp, a reservation, so the 'normal' humans can sleep at night knowing that the animals are in their cages. That's why we call it The Zoo."
