"You've had a rough morning," you tell him.

"Mentally, you're in no shape to handle school today. Missing one day won't kill you." You pull out your cell phone and call the school office, telling them that Brandon has a fever and will be out of school for today.

"Let's go home."

Brandon smiles. "Sounds good."

Half an hour later, you and Brandon are back at your house, sitting on the sofa watching Ferris Bueller's Day Off and eating your way through a plate of cheese, salami and crackers. "This is wonderful, Mom," Brandon mumbles. His words are muffled by the cracker in his mouth but understandable. "I love you."

"I love you too," you purr, wrapping an arm around Brandon and resting his head on your shoulder and upper chest. You both remain silent for a while and enjoy the movie.
