"Thank you," Janine says as she returns to her preparations. You leave her alone to go watch TV.
About an hour later you hear the doorbell. That means your mother-in-law has arrived. From the hallway, you can hear your wife open the door and welcome Patricia, so you greet her as well. As expected, she's alone. Not having to put up with Neil is the best news you've had in months, which says a lot about your relationship with your father-in-law. The news brightens your mood considerably.
"Hello," you say.
"Hello, dear," Patricia answers with a big smile (looks like you are not the only one in a better mood without Neil).
After some meaningless chit-chat, you all sit down at the dining table. At first, your wife asks only about her extended family, but after half an hour, and a bottle of red wine, the conversation turns toward the reason for the sudden family dinner.
"So, mother, how is dad?" Janine asks.
"Like always, dear." Patricia sighs. "After a quarrel, I just needed to get some fresh air," she smiles. " I hope I haven't made any problems for you."
"Of course not, mom," Janine says. "You can live here as long as you want. Right, dear?" Janine says to me as she elbows you in the ribs.
"Of course," you say. You start to blush because of how passionate those words sounded. Janine doesn't notice anything but Patricia looks straight at you. You look away, embarrassed.
"Good," Patricia says as she sips some wine. Then, after a minute of silence, she adds, "Because I want to try something new." You blush some more.
"Mom!" Janine jumps.
"It's such a figure of speech." Patricia smiled.
