Dez quickly loosened the knots and slipped the ropes off Jan's wrists and ankles. His skin was raw and starting to bruise.
"How long have you been in here?" Dez asked. Jan raised his head and glanced at the clock, then let it fall back to the bed.
"Almost an hour." He groaned and sat up, one hand absently trying to smooth back his tangled hair. "I'm going to kill that son-of-a-bitch."
"Why did he do this to you?"
Jan shrugged. "Why not? Same reason, different reason, no reason--He's a coward and a liar and he'll do anything to torment me. But let's stop talking about him. He's not worth the breath. Let's talk about you."
"Me?" Dez said, surprised. "What about me?"
"You saved me," Jan said, "and unlike every other mage in this castle, you didn't ask anything in return." He'd thought about it, though. "I think that sort of nobility entitles you to a reward." Jan reached out and placed his hand on Dez's thigh.
