You cast the spell and feel a clear sense of threat take root in your soul. The approaching shape, says an inner voice, is a vicious Serpent!

Then the break in the grass is upon you, and sure enough, an enormous Serpent rises up from the grass, its body the thickness of two broad men and its eyes red like stove-pots, lit with an inner fire.

The Serpent rears up out of the grass and bares its enormous fangs! You are ready, with sword in hand, to take it on.

• Cut across its body
