Your blobs develop a rudimentary predatory instinct! As the new year begins, there is an influx of other species into your habitat. Many are as small and insignificant as your own, while others are larger and far more dangerous. Fortunately, the latter are largely uninterested in food as pithy as your single-celled blobs.
With no warning, a triple-celled organism navigates into your corner of the world and swallows one of your own. You are easily able to overwhelm the enroaching blob with your superior rudimentary predatory instinct, and absorb it, allowing you to reproduce earlier than otherwise possible.
