“Do you want to come with me?” Your simple question stands before the young man. Then in keeping with the delayed answers of the conversation, he takes a few moments before saying, “Yes Please.”
You both look in each-others eyes. You see his brown eyes with resolve, and he sees yours with confidence. Sherman leans forward for a kiss, but without privacy you stop him short. A few onlookers walking by slow down to see what might happen. You both agree to leave school. You walk to your car, Sherman to his, and you follow him because he promised his house to be empty, but it wasn’t.
Sherman unlocks the door, but when he’s turning his key, his Dad opens the door for him. Then, without a word, playfully headlocks his son to drag him inside. “I missed you kid!” He says tackling him to the floor. Sherman goes limp, he can’t win against his Dad. “His Dad then whispers just loud enough for you to hear, “Who’s your friend?” Sherman mumbles something into the floor, and his Dad gets off of him. He stands, then moves to shake your hand. “Nice to meet you.” He says, then leans into your ear. “Be good to the poor kid.” Sherman stands up. “Dad?” Could you leave us alone?” His Dad holds up his hands like a surrender, then leaves into his room, a knowing smile on his face.
“I like your Dad.” You say to Sherman as he leads you down the hall into your room.
“He’s not my ‘Dad’. He’s my Mom’s boyfriend.” He replies.
“How long have they been together?”
“14 years. My mom doesn’t believe in Marriage after my father divorced.” His last words had a weight to them.
He opens his room door. “So, do you want to do this?”
