You start trying doors.
The first room you check is empty. The next door you try leads to a furnished room. It seems to have been a sitting room at some point. There's a single window in the wall- more of a slit than anything else. Harsh chairs line the room, and tapestries adorn the walls. A divan in the corner looks particularly inviting, despite the fact that it's falling apart. On the other side of the room, you notice a portrait.
It's of a man. There's something disconcerting about him, though you can't decide quite what it is. Despite the fact that it's just canvas, the picture seems to look at you almost... hungrily. You put your hand in your pocket and feel the reassuring touch of the crucifix.
After a moment's hesitation, you take it out and put it around your neck. It's not like anyone's going to know you're giving in to superstition, after all. Half expecting something, you look back at the picture, but the man stares at you just the same. You shrug and leave the room.
You step back into the entry hall. There are a few more doors to try. You head off to the next one. It's across the room, and on the other side of a field of jumbled debris. Picking your way requires you to pay close attention to where you're walking, which in turn causes you to see the footprints in the dust.
Michael. You think. It's gotta be him! You look up, and try to see where the footprints are going, and where they came from. The come from one of the rooms and.. you can't tell where they go without following them. Odd. Your footprints from earlier are already gone, erased by the breeze. Did someone else pass through while you were gone?
"Hello? Is anyone here?" No answer, only the whistling of the breeze.
You could see where the prints came from or where they're going.
