You aren't afraid of any birds. You stay put, and bite into your bread. There's a sudden, sharp pain in your leg. Nothing to do with the birds; they are circling overhead, calling to each other in a panic.
You look down to see a small feather sticking out of your thigh. Not a Woodgull feather either, but something shorter and darker. Pulling it clear reveals a sharpened thorn tip. The birds overhead are screaming and swooping. You realise now they did not lift to come after your food, but rather, because they were startled by something else.
In a tree a short distance away, you can see the black face of a Headhunter leering at you with a blowpipe in one hand and a long, curved knife in the other.
