You keep going, placing one hand against the wall. There are a few twists and turns, and once you almost fall down a few stairs, but finally, you see a light ahead.
It opens into a stable.
"Igor, we don't have much time!" you hear doctor Kreuger say
"Mathter, we'll be ready in jutht a minute!" Igor replies. He's harnessing the horses, who are nervous and shying away. He notices you. "Mathter, we have company"
Doctor Kreuger turns toward you and stands. "It was you who let them in, wasn't it?" He looks very angry.
"Yes. It was. You were releasing monsters on them, and you needed to be stopped."
"Stopped! Stopped!?! I'm simply doing research here! Why do people always attack what they don't understand? Because of you, years of work are gone! I'll have to start all over again."
"No, Doctor Kreuger. It ends here. No more."
"And you're going to stop me? How?" He looks incredulous. "Igor, are we ready yet?"
"Almotht, Thir!"
Your mind races as you try to think of a way to detain him.
Doctor Krueger smirks. "Nothing? No empty threats or anything? I'm disappointed in you, Melissa. Really!"
"We're ready, Thir!" Igor says, as he opens the stable doors.
"Well, I wish I could say it was a pleasure. Should we meet again, I will not be so naive."
This is your last chance. You can't think of anything to say, but you can think of something to do. You rush Igor and snatch the reins from him. Before either Igor or the doctor can react, you slap one of the horses on the flank, hard. The horses run down the path, dragging the empty coach behind them. You hear a few yells as someone notices the coach.
You turn back to Nicholae. "That is what I'm going to do."
The doctor's gloating expression has turned to fear. "What have you done! They'll kill me!"
A minute later, some of the townsmen arrive in the stable. They begin arguing over what to do with him. Some want to cast him out with nothing, others want to kill him.
You step in. "It's not your decision what to do with him. The government should decide."
Some people grumble about this, but you remind them that you made all this possible. Finally, Doctor Kreuger is escorted down to the local church (the town's not big enough for a police station). While you escort him, others set fire to the castle, destroying his work once and for all.
Later, you hand doctor Kreuger over to the law. The volume of the testimony against him is enough to but him behind bars for now, though you wonder if the testimony will hold up, strange as it is. The last you see of him, he's in handcuffs, speeding away towards the city.
You retire to your room to think about everything that's gone on the last few days. You never thought you'd be contending against mad scientists. You pull out the papers you retrieved from his lab. They might be all that's left of the place. As you try to decipher them, it occurs to you that you don't know what happened to Igor. With everyone focused on the doctor, he must have managed to slip away.
The world you left seems very far away, and you wonder if you'll ever really be able to enter it again.
