Hung Mung is a a Sage of ancient China and Official Discordian Missionary to the Heathen Chinee [sic]. He who originally devised THE SACRED CHAO. Patron of the Season of Chaos. Holyday: Jan 5.
Hung Mung predates modern Discordianism by over two thousand years, being a character in the ancient Chinese book, The Writings of Chuang Tzu (also known as Zhuangzi). A quote from this work is referenced in the Principia Discordia as being part of Kerry Thornley's The Honest Book of Truth. The first English translation of Chuang Tzu's book appears to have been published in 1881. Hung Mung's name in Chinese is 鸿蒙 (unsimplified: 鴻蒙) and can be translated as "foolish goose".
