Stirring up the inn?
Have Bedo got any specific reason for wanting to do more to stir up the inn? --Samuel<Talk> 00:10, 2 April 2006 (PST)
- No - it's just that with the party splitting into groups and heading away, he doesn't know where else thay can meet up again. The inn is the one place in the area that all know.
Redirects versus Templates
Would a template be a better option? One template would do for all the character sheets, another for all the information pages, another for all user pages, etc. Nice? --James\\Talk 06:13, 5 April 2006 (PDT)
Good point, however, so far I've not managed to do it satisfactorily with templates - all I can do is substitute them in, rather than use them for references. Is what you are suggesting to include templates, which themselves include the reference to the specific page? If so I'm sure it can be done - just I've not quite figured it out.
This at least makes to dead easy to put in links in future just by wrapping words in double square brackets.
I'm doing a global replace on a big page at the moment to link names to the redirect pages - found the easiest way is to cut the entire page content, paste it into Word as text, substitute in the square brackets, then paste it back into the Wiki.
Let's see how it looks once I'm done - which will probably be only a few more minutes. If it doesn't work, we can use the same method to swap it to templates.

Well... the template call would be {{X|NAME}} which would contain the text for a link to a character page, with the name part of the link as a field that accepts NAME, and X can be anything you like, e.g. C, for the sake of brevity. --James\\Talk 06:37, 5 April 2006 (PDT)
Yes, for the sake of two characters, you save yourself creating redirect pages, and you can apply the idea to other character pages, too.--James\\Talk 06:40, 5 April 2006 (PDT)
My feeling from having a quick play around, and a read, is that redirects are probably easier - apart from the initial work - for a couple of reasons.
The key one is that it's so easy to stick any name into a pair of square brackets pretty well any time it's used, rather than having templates for some links, and links for others. 1 method is easier to remember and do than two.
If we get used to doing this, any time we use a name, it'll flag up spelling mistakes, duplicate names (if we were expecting a new name), and either automatically give a link to place names, NPCs and such like if they already exist, or drop them onto the Special:Wantedpages list, to allow someone to expand on them if needed. This will work for a very high proportion of names - it's only the complicated ones where there's more than one page that it will fail - unless we put a redirect page to point to whichever lower level page is appropriate.
The second one is that with those characters - particularly the mages - I can see us ending up with more pages to link to for each character than fits comfortably on the The_Characters page box for each character. If that happens, the redirect page can easily be changed into a start page for links to other pages relating to that character. --OldNick\\Talk 08:21, 5 April 2006 (PDT)
- That sounds good. I'm tempted to add 'Wantedpages' to the sidebar, but I doubt it would be used by anyone other than us. Given how well my template colours were recieved, it seems that people aren't keen on them anyway. :D --James\\Talk 11:19, 19 April 2006 (PDT)
Geraldous
- Part of that is just Mnemosyne being meticulous/having a stick up her butt. Anything you like really of what you saw - or great if you get some info off James. Fill in as desired - I doubt any of it will stop us from immeadiately poking around in the Regio :) Hope you have a nice time in silly clothes :P--Perikles 10:39, 13 April 2006 (PDT)
Nick, In the "Under a Perfect Blue Sky" thread, we are at a place where I think Geraldous might want to leap into action. I'll hold off on my next post until Monday evening your time to give you some time to post up. --Rencheple 11:38, 30 April 2006 (PDT)
