Background and History
Blathmac's father, also Blathmac, was (and still is) a carpenter at Marcus' home covenant. His son, Blathmac mac Blaithmeic, showed an almost supernatural gift early in his life for working with the livestock around the covenant and a little research by the magi revealed that the word "almost" was not needed, it was supernatural. This was perhaps not completely surprising in a second generation covenant servant.
He and Marcus met soon after Marcus' arrival and became, if not friends, at least friendly. Blathmac had the care of most of the larger animals at the covenant, including all the mules, which meant that he and Marcus were thrown together fairly often when Marcus and Julius were preparing for or returning from one of their jaunts around the country.
The other focus of Blathmac's affectin was Derbail inghean Conchobair, the goose-girl (and care taker of all the poultry) at the covenant. When, in the winter of 1218, she fell into a pond breaking her leg and taking ill, he was distraught. When she died, he withdrew from anything with the appearance of romance or love, becoming nearly asexual and certainly celibate and throwing himself into his work and the care of his wards.
When Marcus made ready to leave the Covenant, Blathmac asked to go with him not only to leave the scene of sad memories of Derbail, but also to make sure that the mules that Marcus took would be well cared for.
