It's about a guy named Light who can kill people with epic writing. And some guy named L who goes after Light. And there's some shinigami who like apples. And Misa-Misa, because Death Note is nothing without Misa-Misa. (It should be noted that Misa-Misa is so annoying that she makes Shippo tolerable to hang out with.)

As a side note, it should be noted that the single best thing to come out of Death Note is an abundance of attractively drawn yaoi and fanart of the sexy male main characters. The runner up would be the endless parody potential within Death Note that has spawned countless crossover images.
