The humor in Yu-Gi-Oh! the Abridged Series is great and varied. Generally speaking, it can be divided into several groups.

[edit] Parody

Very often the humor of the series is based on the original anime. The Abridged Series will draw excess attention to the more unbelievable aspects of the anime, highlighting their absurdity. For example, characters will often refer to Duel Monsters as "a children's card game", even when such a term would be inappropriate in such a situation, therefore turning what would be a dramatic moment into a humorous one.

Conversely, sometimes Yu-Gi-Oh! the Abridged Series will use text taken directly from the anime, as a means of pointing out just how ridiculous the original dialogue is when the viewer does not willingly suspend their disbelief.

Many major aspects of the characters of original anime are made fun of on a regular basis, including Kaiba's love of dragons and technology, Mokuba's propensidy toward being kidnapped, Bakura's accent, Pegasus's ambiguous sexuality, and other such characteristics. Some characters of the Abridged Series are developed entirely around a single trait of theirs, such as Kemo's hair, and Bandit Keith's nationality.

Characters in the Yu-Gi-Oh! the Abridged Series will frequently break the fourth wall, discussing such things as the plot of the series, the roles of the individual characters, and other such matters. The characters also regularly lampoon 4Kids entertainment, and the censorship of the English translation of the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime.

On occasion, the Abridged Series breaks the fourth wall twice, with characters showing awareness not only that they are in a television show (Yu-Gi-Oh!), but demonstrating that they are aware of Yu-Gi-Oh! the Abridged Series as a separate entity.

[edit] Popular culture

In addition to parodying the original anime, the Abridged Series often makes reference to other areas of popular culture, including films, television and the internet. Music also comes into play, when popular music is often used as background music, with a song relating specifically to the situation in which it is being used.

While most references to popular culture are brief, a few are recurring. For example, the characters of Rex Raptor and Weevil Underwood are modeled directly after the characters Beavis and Butt-head.

[edit] Original Humor

While Yu-Gi-Oh! the Abridged Series makes frequent use of parody and popular culture, there is a significant amount of original humor as well.
