Translations

From Woofgui

Important ground-rule

Before translations are initialized, we have to settle on the necessary dialogues! If possible, we should come up with ALL the texts we'll need, make sure that they are usable + sensible and ONLY then begin bothering friends + colleagues with translations! They will be highly & rightly annoyed if we keep bothering them again&again!

A-Z List of Translations we can provide

  • Chinese
  • Croatian
  • Dutch
  • English (UK/US)
  • French
  • German
  • Korean
  • Portugese
  • Spanish
  • Turkish
  • ...

Consider asking friends + colleagues for translations! What we cannot provide, we'll enter into the translations-page on Launchpad so that others can help us out.

How to create/edit translations in Python

In the folder locale/ is the file woof_ui.pot which should contain everything from the woof_ui script we wish to translate. As for now only the major strings are present in this file. Running "msginit --locale=xy --input=woof_ui.pot" with "xy" being the abbreviation for the desired language will create xy.po. This file is copied to the folder (locale/)xy/LC_MESSAGES/ where it can be filled with the according translations. When everything is translated you have to create the binary file which python can use for the translation by running "msgfmt xy.po". This will probably create the file "messages.mo". Either way the newly created .mo file has to be renamed to "woof_ui.mo" which can now be used within the python script.
