A leak test determines if an unauthorized program can "dial out" without your knowledge or without the firewall blocking it.

Obviously, this is somewhat important: you don't want trojans or viruses to be accessing the Internet. However, with careful download practices and an anti-virus/anti-spyware program, the necessity of a high leak test score is reduced.
