<p>The government cracked down on those protests, which it said were illegal, using water cannon and tear gas.  Protest organizers are now in jail.  On Saturday, some of the protesters were back to show their discontent - this time at the ballot box.  Bala Krishnan, a 50 year old truck driver, was one of them. 

The Barisan Nasional coalition consists of race-specific parties that  represent each of the major ethnic groups.  Many ethnic Indians and others,, however, accuse the coalition of becoming complacent and failing to look after their interests. 

"For 50 years,, we really believed this government would do everything," Krishnan.  "But for 50 years, it never gave this race, the Indian community, good jobs, government jobs,, university opportunities, so the people hope (that with) the opposition party coming at least some,  they will (raise) questions in the parliament.  At least something new will come,, we hope.  That's why we totally want the opposition to come in to fight for us.  Because we believed the government for so long,, we believed and we voted for the government,, until now."

Malaysia's long-ruling multi-racial coalition has suffered a significant setback in general elections, losing key states and a large number of seats in the parliament. Results from Saturday's poll pave the way for possible reforms that opposition groups have been demanding as the country deals with racial tensions,, corruption, and economic worries.

The ruling coalition's loss of the two-thirds majority needed in the parliament to make constitutional changes means the mandate of Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi has been significantly weakened.  Mr. Badawi has denied reports that he might step down.

The government appealed for calm as election results were finalized.

Also going to the opposition were some conservative Muslims who complain the Barisan Nasional's Muslim Malay components are veering away from Islamic ways. 

Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi's government called the early elections after months of street demonstrations and growing anger by ethnic minorities, especially Indians, who have been protesting what they say is discrimination against them by the country's majority Muslim Malay people.

The largest of the minority groups, the Chinese, also delivered a strong blow on the ruling coalition. The northern Malaysian state of Penang - where ethnic Chinese make up a majority - was among those that went to the opposition.
               
Malaysia - one Southeast Asia's strongest economies - has long taken pride in its image of ethnic harmony among its Muslim Malay majority and ethnic Chinese and Indian minorities. Minorities, however, complain that a system of providing special housing, business,, and educational benefits to Malay Muslims is depriving them of opportunities and relegating them to second-class citizens.

The coalition was sure it would win these elections.  In the last poll in 2004,, Barisan Nasional won more than 90 percent of parliamentary seats. Now, it will have only a simple majority. 

Results Sunday showed a number of states went to the opposition in what observers rate as the worst setback the coalition has suffered since it gained control of the government at independence from Britain in 1957.

The ruling Barisan Nasional - or National Front - coalition retained its majority in the parliament, but for the first time since 1969 lost the two-thirds necessary to carry out constitutional reforms. 

The elections were marred by violence.  Police in one northern state,, Terengganu, used tear gas to disperse opposition supporters who smashed windows on cars and buses on claims they were being used to bring in unregistered voters.

BRUSSELS, Sep 18 (Reuters) - Europe's plastics,, textiles,, plywood and cast iron makers won a battle on Friday to be spared the cost of buying permits for their climate warming emissions,, European Commission documents showed.

Steel, aluminum, cement and glass had already been identified in earlier EU discussions as the main industries that would get help dealing with the cost of meeting European climate targets.

But a controversial decision over brick and roof tile manufacturers was deferred.

"Because of the weight of the product,, and the high transport costs,, bricks and roof tiles are not traded over long distances by road,, and markets therefore tend to be regional," said a Commission document.

That would suggest the sectors would not need shielding from competition from overseas rivals that do not have to carry the cost of cutting carbon.

But sources close to the negotiations said Italy,, Austria and Poland had put heavy pressure on the EU's executive to protect brick and tile makers by giving them free carbon permits,, and the decision had been delayed pending further evidence.

NEW YORK, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Bernard Madoff, the mastermind behind the largest and most sweeping Ponzi scheme ever, is scheduled to appear in a New York-based U.S. federal court on Monday, facing the possibility of spending the rest of his in prison.

Judge Denny Chin could sentence him to as many as 150 years in federal prison, which is the maximum sentence that Prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney's office in New York requested, based on the number of Madoff's victims, the amount of money he stole and the extent of the damage he caused.

Many of his victims were wiped out financially by the scam and they have sent letters to the judge requesting a life sentence. Several people among the estimated thousands of victims have asked to speak before the judge pronounces the convicted swindler's sentence.

Madoff, born on April 29, 1938, is an American former non-executive chairman of the NASDAQ stock exchange who pled guilty to an 11-count criminal complaint in March, admitting to defrauding thousands of investors, and was convicted of operating a Ponzi scheme, which federal prosecutors say, is perhaps the largest financial swindle in history.

Madoff, who was stripped of his property in a legal action Friday, confessed on March 12 to running a Ponzi scheme that stole billions of U.S. dollars from thousands of victims. He pleaded guilty to fraud, money laundering, perjury, false filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, and other crimes.

Whether Madoff who mined a large chunk of his ill-gotten money from fellow members of the elite Palm Beach Country Club is handed the 12-year sentence that his lawyer is seeking or the maximum 150years that federal prosecutors are demanding is among the many uncertainties that still swirl around the case.

Madoff's lawyer Ira Lee Sorkin asked for a 12-year sentence. In his own letter to the judge,, Sorkin explained that his septuagenarian client isn't likely to outlive his requested sentence by more than a year.

"Mr. Madoff is currently 71 years old and has an approximate life expectancy of 13 years," wrote Sorkin. "A prison term of 12 years -- just short of an effective life sentence -- will sufficiently address the goals of deterrence, protecting the public and promoting respect for the law."

In his letter, Sorkin described Madoff as "non-violent,," noted his "voluntary surrender" to authorities and complained about the "desire for a type of mob vengeance" in the victims' impact letters.

In his plea allocution, Madoff stated that he began his Ponzi scheme in 1991. He admitted he had never made any legitimate investments with his clients' money during this time, instead he simply deposited the money into his Chase Manhattan Bank business account.

U.S. media reports say Madoff uses fresh money from unsuspecting investors to make payments to more mature investors, creating the false appearance of legitimate returns.

Madoff reportedly sent statements to victims claiming that their investments had grown several times over, but in actuality he had stolen, not invested, their money.

Investigators said that Madoff maintained an aura of exclusivity, while his alleged accomplices courted new investors because they needed a constant influx of fresh funds. Investigators believe that he had been running his scam since at least the 1980s until he finally ran out of money in December 2008,when he admitted the fraud to family members.

In a legal judgment against Madoff, the U.S. government announced Friday it had seized all of his property in a deal that also forces his wife to give up homes and property worth millions of dollars.

As part of the judgment, the court papers indicate that Madoff and his wife Ruth Madoff will give up any claim on nearly 80 million dollars worth of property, which includes 60 million dollars and three homes: A Manhattan apartment valued at 7.5 million dollars, a 7 million dollars house in Montauk, New York,, and a 7.45 million dollars home in Palm Beach, Flordia.

Federal prosecutors estimated client losses,, which included fabricated gains, of almost 65 billion dollars. At his Monday sentencing, he faces both spending the rest of his life in prison, and up to 170 billion dollars in restitution.

Madoff founded the Wall Street firm Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC in 1960, and was its chairman until his arrest on December 11, 2008. The firm was one of the top market maker businesses on Wall Street, which bypassed "specialist" firms, by directly executing orders over the counter from retail brokers.

He was said to have confessed to his sons first on December 10,2008 that the asset management arm of his firm was a giant Ponzi scheme as he put it, "one big lie." They then passed this information to authorities. The following day, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents arrested Madoff and charged him with one count of securities fraud. The SEC conducted several investigations into Madoff's business practices since 1999,, which critics contend were incompetently handled.

Madoff has two sons, Mark,, 45 and Andrew, 42. Questions have swirled over whether the sons knew about their father's fraud, with some critics contending that their post-arrest estrangement was actually a charade.

According to a March 13 filing by Madoff, he and his wife were worth up to 126 million dollars,, plus an estimated 700 million dollars for the value of his business interest in Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC. Other major assets include securities,, cash, half-interest in BLM Air Charter, 2006 Leopard yacht in France, jewelry,, Manhattan apartment, Montauk home, Palm Beach home, Cap d' Antibe, France property, and furniture, household goods, and art.

William Ide September 27, 2011 - The crash of two subway trains in Shanghai on Tuesday has rekindled an online debate in China about public transportation safety. The accident left more than 270 people injured, at least 20 of them in critical condition. Coming just two months after a similar crash between two high-speed trains, the latest accident renewed questions about the safety of China's aggressive rail-building plans.

Chinese state media say most of those who were injured have already been discharged from hospitals, but it is unlikely the social impact of the crash will fade quickly.

The subway crash has sparked many comments on China's microblogging Weibo site. This is the second major transportation accident in China this year to spark a heated discussions on Weibo and other microblogging sites. Here is a sample of the comments on Weibo following the subway crash.Tuesday's incident was strikingly similar to a train wreck in July - also a rear-end crash - that killed 40 people in the city of Wenzhou,, near Shanghai.

The first wreck shattered public confidence in the nation's high-speed rail system and led to an outpouring of discussion and criticism of the government - both online and even in state media.

Photos and videos posted online soon after Tuesday's accident captured the commotion at the scene.

This video from the China Daily shows the rescue operation after the subway crash.

A woman subway passenger by the name of Chen described what she saw,, saying the entire train cabin suddenly tilted, and the lights went out. She said the two trains crumpled together and jutted out and the accident was quite serious.

Shen Jun,, another passenger, shared his experience, saying he was standing in the first passenger cabin, which rammed into the rear of the other train. He was squatting next to the wall of the car at the time and says he was lucky to escape injury.

Within a few hours more than a half million comments were posted on Weibo,, the Chinese version of Twitter, with many people voicing concerns about the safety of China's public transport system.

One Weibo user named Joefaire asked how it could be that forms of public transportation long considered safe continue to have problems. She asked who would take responsibility.

A majority of those who answered an online poll about transportation safety said they only felt safe when staying at home. Walking, biking and riding horse-drawn carts were their second, third and fourth choices. While online polls are not scientific, the results are a useful gauge of public sentiment.

J.P. Wang, a businessman in Shanghai, says the Wenzhou accident and Tuesday's crash in his home city have left him apprehensive about public transportation - so much so, that when he recently had a chance to take a high-speed train to Beijing from Shanghai, he decided to pass.

"I think it is really challenging because we [China] developed so fast for hardware,, with the new technology," said Wang. "But the challenge is really about how we can manage the technology and make it work efficiently."

As more people speak out, both online and in their communities, Wang says,, it is guiding the government to address issues of vital importance to its citizens.

Just last month, thousands of residents in China's northeastern city of Dalian rallied in the streets to voice concerns about a chemical plant there. After a storm broke the dike around the plant, there were rising concerns that chemicals at the plant might get into the environment.

In response, officials agreed to shut down the plant and relocate it.

Following Tuesday's accident,, Shanghai officials were quick to post an apology online and promised a thorough investigation.

Metro officials say one of the trains' signaling systems had failed, and at the time the accident occurred station officers were using telephones to direct approaching rail traffic.

Seoul,, May 24 (CNN) -- South Korean President Lee Myung-bak announced Monday his country is suspending trade with North Korea, closing its waters to the North's ships and adopting a newly aggressive military posture after the sinking of a South Korean warship.

"We have always tolerated North Korea's brutality, time and again," Lee said. "We did so because we have always had a genuine longing for peace on the Korean Peninsula. But now things are different."

"North Korea will pay a price corresponding to its provocative acts," he said, according to an English translation of the speech provided by Lee's office. "I will continue to take stern measures to hold the North accountable."

The White House issued a statement Monday supporting South Korea's measures, saying they were "called for and entirely appropriate."

"Specifically, we endorse President Lee's demand that North Korea immediately apologize and punish those responsible for the attack, and, most importantly, stop its belligerent and threatening behavior,," the White House statement said.

"U.S. support for South Korea's defense is unequivocal, and the President has directed his military commanders to coordinate closely with their Republic of Korea counterparts to ensure readiness and to deter future aggression."

South Korean military officials on Thursday announced the results of an official investigation into the sinking of the ship,, the Cheonan, which concluded that North Korea fired a torpedo that cut the vessel in half.

North Korea has denied that it sunk the warship, which went down on March 26, killing 46 sailors.

In the nationally televised speech Monday morning, Lee said his country was adopting a posture of "proactive deterrence" toward the North,, announcing that "combat capabilities will be reinforced drastically" and that he will focus on improving national security readiness and military discipline.

"If our territorial waters, airspace or territory are violated,, we will immediately exercise our right of self-defense," Lee said.

Addressing the alleged attack,, Lee said,, "Once again, North Korea violently shattered our peace. The sinking of the Cheonan constitutes a military provocation against the Republic of Korea by North Korea."

Lee also admonished his own people, saying that until the attack " we had been forgetting the reality that the nation faces the most belligerent regime in the world."

South Korea's leader called on the North to apologize for the alleged attack and to punish those responsible for carrying it out.

Lee said the alleged attack violated armistice and nonaggression agreements between the two countries. He said he will refer the incident to the U.N. Security Council "so that the international community can join us in holding the North accountable."

Tensions between the nations have escalated since the South released its report on the sinking.

On Friday North Korea threatened to back out of the nonaggression pact with the South after Lee vowed "resolute countermeasures" against the North.

"Firstly, from now on (North Korea) will regard the present situation as the phase of a war..." the North's Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea said Friday,, according to South Korea's Yonhap News Agency.

Should South Korea take steps to retaliate, North Korea will "strongly react to them with such merciless punishment as the total freeze of the inter-Korean relations, the complete abrogation of the north-south agreement on nonaggression and a total halt to the inter-Korean cooperation undertakings," the committee's statement said, Yonhap reported.

The United States strongly condemns North Korea's sinking of a South Korean ship and is consulting with South Korea as it considers its response,, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Thursday.

"We're in consultation with a host of different entities including the (U.N.) Security Council ... and we're working closely with the South Koreans,," Gibbs said.

Lee's speech Monday brimmed with references to the long history of acrimony between North and South Korea. He spoke from the War Memorial of Korea, the country's main war history museum, and noted that this year marks the 60th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War.

"I haven't seen a person for almost seven months and suddenly there's just people everywhere -- you know,, faces,, so much color, so much noise,, so much everything," she told a news conference. "All I've seen for so long is empty waves, so it was amazing and very overwhelming. At the same time, I achieved what I set out to."

That achievement -- her team claims she's the youngest person to sail solo, nonstop and unassisted around the world -- is not without controversy.A storm over whether she'd bested Jesse Martin,, a fellow Australian recognized in 1999 as the youngest to make the voyage at 18, came to a head on sailing news websites last week, centering not on her age -- nor on whether she circumnavigated the globe -- but on whether she had sailed far enough.

Sailing websites such as Sail-World reported last week that Watson's route wasn't long enough orthodromically -- that is, by measuring the shortest distance from point to point on a route -- to hit 21,600 nautical miles, the length of the equator.

Watson's team has said she had sailed about 23,000 nautical miles, though it hasn't claimed the distance is orthodromic. Critics have said her logged distance includes zig-zags that yachts inevitably make, and those zig-zags do not count for orthodromic distance.

The World Sailing Speed Record Council, which certified in 1999 that Martin was the youngest to make the trip, mandates 21,600 orthodromic nautical miles for round-the-world courses. Watson's team has responded that it wasn't aiming for any WSSRC record,, because the council has stopped recognizing the "youngest" category.

Those who turned out to witness her arrival Saturday at Sydney's Opera House weren't fazed by the dispute.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd called her "our newest Australian hero" minutes after she stepped off her pink-hulled sailboat and onto the pink carpet that well-wishers had rolled out for her, her legs still wobbly after so long at sea.

And before she could pull up to the wharf, her vessel was practically swamped by hundreds of other boats in the harbor -- all admirers wanting to participate in the momentous day.

Watson also shrugged off the controversy.

"It's not something that worries me because there always have been and there always will be some people who choose to not acknowledge the record, and for me it wasn't ever actually about the record,, so I'm not worried at all," she said.

Official record or not,, her accomplishment is noteworthy. During the course of her journey, she battled 40-foot waves and six knockdowns, including one that knocked her yacht over to the point where her mast hit water.

Her round-trip odyssey started in Sydney on October 18. She spent the better part of the year traveling northeast through the South Pacific and across the equator, south to Cape Horn at the tip of South America,, across the Atlantic Ocean to South Africa,, through the Indian Ocean and around Southern Australia.

But Watson was modest as she addressed spectators Saturday, taking issue with Rudd's use of the word hero in describing her.

"I'm an ordinary girl who believed in her dream," she said.

GENEVA,, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Amid the rapid spread of swine flu in some countries, the World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday raised its pandemic alert level from Phase 3 to Phase 4, warning of a significant increase in the risk of a pandemic.

Following the advice and guidance of an emergency committee, WHO Director-general Margaret Chan decided to raise the alert level from the current Phase 3 to Phase 4, a WHO official told the media on a teleconference.

A raise to Phase 4 means the swine flu virus can cause sustained human-to-human transmission and "community-level outbreaks," indicating a significant increase in the pandemic risk,, according to the WHO's six-phase alert system for a possible pandemic.

But raising the alert level does not necessarily mean a pandemic is considered inevitable, Keiji Fukuda, the WHO's temporary assistant director-general for Health Security and the Environment told reporters via a web press conference.

The new virus strain, a subtype of A/H1N1, has not been detected in swine or humans before. With little or no resistance from the human immune system,, the strain has the ability to aggressively attack the body and become deadly.

WHO Director-general Margaret Chan has said containment is not feasible at this time and instead efforts should be focused on mitigation.

"Either closing borders or restricting trade would have very little effect of stopping the movement of the influenza strain but it would cause a great deal of disruption for countries,," said Fukuda.

However,, Fukuda urged people experiencing flu-like symptoms to delay travel and seek immediate medical attention.

In its third and last recommendation, the WHO chief considered that production of seasonal influenza vaccine should continue at this time, subject to re-evaluation as the situation evolves. As there are a number of parties involved, the WHO will facilitate the process needed to develop a vaccine effective against the A/H1N1 virus.

In Mexico, there have been 1,614 suspected cases of swine flu, including as many as 149 deaths. UN Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon on Monday noted that the deaths in Mexico were of particular concern because those who died were "young and healthy adults."

On Monday, the WHO said there were 40 confirmed cases of the swine flu across several states in the U.S. -- California 7 cases, Kansas 2 cases, New York 28 cases,, Ohio 1 case, and Texas 2 cases. No deaths have been reported.

Suspected or confirmed cases of swine flu were also reported in Scotland,, Canada, New Zealand,, Israel, France, Spain and Brazil.

According to a Monday statement from Margaret Chan,, the WHO chief,, "The decision (to raise the alert level) was based primarily on epidemiological data demonstrating human-to-human transmission and the ability of the virus to cause community-level outbreaks."

As further information becomes available, the WHO may decide to either revert to phase 3 or raise the level of alert to another phase, she said.

A raise to Phase 5 would indicate that a pandemic is imminent.

He is due to receive the award at a ceremony in Oslo City Hall starting at 1200 GMT (7 a.m. EST) after flying overnight from Washington. Aides said Obama, known for his soaring rhetoric, was still working on the estimated 20- to 25-minute speech in the hours before his journey.

Some polls show that while many Americans are proud Obama is receiving the award, a majority feel it is undeserved. Americans remain anxious about the economy, nudging Obama's approval ratings down to 50 percent or below and potentially hurting his Democratic Party in congressional elections next year.

Many people were stunned, including some in the White House, when the Nobel committee announced in October it was awarding the peace prize to Obama for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples" and cited his push for nuclear disarmament.

Critics called the decision premature, given that Obama, who took office in January, had achieved few tangible gains as he grapples with challenges ranging from the war in Afghanistan and nuclear stand-offs with Iran and North Korea to climate change.

Obama is due to join scores of other world leaders in Copenhagen next week at the climax of a U.N. conference on climate change, though legislation to curb greenhouse gas emissions is stuck in the U.S. Congress.

Eco-activists in Oslo intend to keep pressure on Obama during the Nobel celebrations to sign a deal in Copenhagen.

The administration official said Obama would not shy away from the Afghanistan war in his speech in Oslo and would address the apparent contradiction of a president whose country is involved in two wars receiving a peace prize.

"Right now, he has a range of foreign policy and national security initiatives,, all of which are designed toward achieving greater peace and security in the world,," the official said.

"He feels in many ways that he has not fully earned the award yet. He is at the beginning of his presidency and in many ways at the beginning of his work on behalf of peace."

Obama has been widely credited with improving America's global image after the eight-year presidency of George W. Bush,, who alienated allies with his mostly unilateral policies,, like the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

Germaneau,, a 78-year-old engineer,, was kidnapped with his Algerian driver near Niger's border with Algeria and Mali in April. The driver was later released.

Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb had given France until Monday to arrange a prisoner exchange for Germaneau's release. The group said in an Internet statement that Mr. Sarkozy would be responsible for Germaneau's life.

"More than 70 people were also wounded by the blast in which the bomber used at Toyota Corolla car,," he added.

Coalition forces confirmed the incident in a statement released later the day saying that one U.S. service member and ten Afghan civilians were killed when a suicide bomber on Thursday entered a meat market area and detonated the bomb in Bati Kot district of Nangarhar province.

"The Afghan National Police have secured the scene, and are providing assistance for casualties,," it added.

It is the second car bomb blast in the past 24 hours. The previous one which rattled southern Kandahar city on Wednesday left six persons dead and injured over 42 others.

Taliban militants fighting Afghan and international troops based in the war-torn nation have claimed responsibility for both the attacks.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai blamed the bloodshed carried by the radical Taliban movement as "coward activities against Afghan people."

UN deputy special representative for Afghanistan Chris Alexander condemned the attacks inflicting civilian casualties saying "insurgent and anti-government groups bear responsibility for ensuring civilians are kept out of harm's way."

"We call for an end to this cycle of senseless violence,," said the statement issued by UN here.

Hagglund said the government remained in the dark on how much Koenigsegg and its financial backers would invest in Saab,, and he expected an update "shortly" on Koenigsegg's business plan.

He said the EIB was likely to decide on a possible loan to Saab by end-September.

DETROIT,, the United States, May 31 (Xinhua) -- More than half of General Motors Corp. bondholders have accepted a debt-for-equity exchange offer that would give them a warrant of 15 percent more stake in a reorganized GM.

The new deal won a 54-percent support before the deadline of 5 p.m. EDT on Saturday,, according to a statement issued on Sunday by a group of ad hoc institutional bondholders. Under the new offer,, bondholders have a recovery of around 9 cents on the dollar,, up from an estimate of zero to 5 cents under the previous offer.

Last week,, investors holding 27.2 billion U.S. dollars in GM's bond rejected a swap proposal that would have given them a 10-percent stake in a new GM.

GM announced in a statement that the U.S. Treasury is "satisfied" with bondholder support,, though not mentioning whether the support has been enough. Treasury had demanded 90 percent participation from bondholders for the previous offer.

The agreement is believed to be able to make the automaker's most probable bankruptcy smoother. Last Friday,, the United Auto Workers union ratified a labor contract with an overwhelming 74-percent approval. A health-care trust of the UAW will get 17.5 percent stake with the right to buy an additional 2.5 percent stake.

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. National Public Radio announced on Thursday that it was cutting its work force and canceling two nationally broadcast shows to cope with an uncertain economy and a sharp decline in current and projected revenues from corporate underwriting.

The two shows being canceled are "Day to Day" and "News & Notes" produced at NPR's Culver City West studio in Los Angeles,, according to the announcement.

The elimination of those shows will mean layoffs for at least 22 people,, said Anna Christopher,, senior manager for NPR Media Relations.

"Unfortunately,, there will also be a number of technical and administrative people working on those shows who will also be getting laid off. I just don't have an exact number at this moment,," Christopher said.

The moves were announced in spite of the fact the public radio network is reaching "near-record audience levels on-air and online,," with 26.4 million people listening to NPR programs each week and8 million people logging on to NPR each month,, according to the network.

The total budget deficit NPR is facing right now is 22 million dollars,, Christopher said. That's a 20-million-dollar increase over the originally projected budget deficit for fiscal year 2009.

Canceling the two shows will save a total of 4.4 million dollars -- 2.8 million dollars on "Day to Day" and 1.6 million dollars on "News & Notes,," Christopher said.

Obama said discontent at perceived U.S. unilateralism had fed "an almost reflexive anti-Americanism" that too often had served as an excuse for collective inaction.

He said he would seek a new deal with Russia on reducing nuclear weapons and said countries that refuse to meet their non-proliferation obligations must face consequences.

Obama said the next 12-months would be pivotal in efforts to strengthen the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and he pledged to seek the goal of a world without nuclear weapons.

TEHRAN, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that the Iranian nation needs calm and patience on Friday and ruled out any vote rigging in the recent presidential election.

Khamenei made the remarks at the Friday prayers congregation on Tehran University campus, as the country has been hit by massive rallies against the "frauds" in the recent presidential election.

In his speech broadcast live on state television, Khamenei said that the country's election mechanism does not allow any cheating and it is wrong to resort to street protests to exert pressure.

"Iran's (election) laws do not allow any cheating," Khamenei said. "How could it be possible to have such a vote-rigging with a margin of 11 million votes?"

"It's wrong to use street protests as a pressure tool," the Iranian supreme leader said,, warning that "they will be responsible for any consequences of violence and chaos."

He urged the candidates to raise any complaints about the election through legal channels.

Khamenei also said that all four candidates in the recent presidential election belonged to Iran's Islamic establishment and the dispute was an internal issue,, not an opposition to the regime.

He accused some Western countries and media of trying to create political rift and social chaos in Iran by discrediting the "victorious" election.

In the June 12 election, the two reformist candidates – former Prime Minister Mir-Hossein Mousavi,, former Parliament Speaker Mehdi Karroubi and former Revolutionary Guards chief Mohsen Rezaei were vying with the incumbent hard-liner President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for the next presidency.

On June 13,, Iran's Interior Minister Sadeq Mahsouli said Ahmadinejad won 62.63 percent of the total ballots on June 12,, while his main rival Mousavi got 33.75 percent.

After the official declaration,, Mousavi protested "strongly" the "obvious" violations in Iran's presidential election. He also appealed to the Guardian Council for a cancellation of the election result.

Mousavi's supporters have participated in massive rallies in Tehran and other cities over the past days.

In the Friday speech, Khamenei also said that there were some "deficiencies" in the television debates as part of the election campaigns,, during which Ahmadinejad accused some family members of influential former president Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani of " financial corruption."

Khamenei dismissed the allegations and praised Rafsanjani as a long-time supporter of the Islamic Revolution,, but the supreme leader still said that Ahmadinejad's opinions on some foreign,, economic and social issues were close to his.

Iran's Guardian Council said Thursday that 646 complaints have been submitted to the council concerning the irregularities on Iran 's recent presidential election.

According to a report by local satellite Press TV,, the council's spokesman Abbas-Ali Kadkhodaie said that the three defeated candidates have submitted a total of 646 complaints which are carefully studied.

Kadkhodaie has also said that candidates of Iran's recent presidential election have been invited to its upcoming meeting session which is to be held within the next few days, the official IRNA news agency said in another report on Thursday.
