Candidates
Candidates with a national campaign were A.A. Alvera, John Dunn, David Gamble, Terry Hughes, Andrew Merrilin, Joseph Salazar-Portela and Valeria Smith. Vincent Halfhyde ran as a favorite son candidate in South Carolina, dropping out of the race after winning that state's primary.
Straw polls
Straw polls were held in the crucial early states of Iowa and South Carolina in the Republican 2016 Presidential primary. The Ames, Iowa straw poll was sponsored by And They're Off! and won by Andrew Merrilin while the South Carolina straw poll was sponsored by the Warren Institute and won by Vincent Halfhyde.
Iowa
AA Alvera, Valeria Smith and Joseph Salazar-Portela appeared at the event to address the straw poll participants. None of the front runners attended, reducing the credibility of the event. Senator Salazar-Portela was considered to have made the best speech of the day, but was unable to convert that into support.
Soon after the straw poll was held, runner up Terry Hughes withdrew from the race and resigned from the Senate.

South Carolina
All candidates bar Terry Hughes, who fell ill and was unable to attend, participated in the forum and straw poll held by the Warren Institute in South Carolina. As expected, Vincent Halfhyde won the straw poll held in his home state, with over one in three participants casting their vote for the Dixie Governor.
