Introduction

The United Kingdom of Sutherway and Dahla (usually shortened to the United Kingdom, the UK, or Sutherway) is a country and sovereign state that is situated on the Prime Timezone. Its territory and population are primarily situated on the Hindurn Peninsula, with additional settlements on numerous smaller islands in the surrounding seas. The United Kingdom is bounded by the Borealis Sea, and its ancillary bodies of water, including the Muyan Sea. The mainland (or main island) is linked to other nations by sea and air traffic as, other than a small portion of Muyangguniang it is too long a distance to surrounding nations. Lesser islands are reached in similiar fashions.

The United Kingdom is a political union made up of two constituent countries: Sutherway and Dahla. The United Kingdom also has several overseas territories, including Muyan Islands and Cinosanap among others. A constitutional monarchy, the United Kingdom is a Commonwealth Realm, sharing the same person — the ruling monarch of the UK — with the other Realms as monarch and head of state.

A member of the USCN, the United Kingdom is a highly developed country with the one of the largest economy in the world. It is a founding member of the USCN, second to Muyangguniang, and holds the second seat. This technically gives it more power over USCN affairs than later nations. The UK is also a founding member of the Northwestern Alliance (NA). Sutherway is also one of the world's major nuclear powers.

History

Sutherway's origins lie in the exploration of British sailors searching for a country to call their own. They landed in the West of Sutherway at a point now called Cape Edinburgh. They set up New Edinburgh and brought in family and friends who wanted to join them on their adventure. At some point in the next year, some settlers went to explore the island but never returned and are believed to have set up Dahla. The rest of the settlers split in two. Most headed East, over the Forth Bay, and set up the colony of Forth Bay; the former capital of Sutherway. In recent times the city of Kirkcaldy was set up and is now the capitol.

Sutherway was heavily influenced by Britain and was part of its Empire but declared itself independent on 14th March 1846. It now has it's own monarchy but power is mostly limited to the parliament. A civil uprising in the early 20th Century almost brought an end to the monarchy but the rebel forces were defeated at Crondight marsh, just 20miles from Forth Bay.

Sutherway is a peaceful country but still holds the biggest navy in the USCN and, arguably, the best trained armed forces. It doesn't have much of an air force even though it is an island nation. Sutherway has only ever declared war on one country in its history and that was against its former ally Dahla in 1878. Dahla occupied the North-Western 1/5 of the Hindurn Archipelago but, after years of poverty, it decided to invade Sutherway. Sutherway quickly conquered the invading forces and, in a quick revenge attack, invaded, the now defenseless, Dahla. A minority of the residents of Dahla formed the DRA (Dahla Republican Army) to try to claim back what, the claim, is rightfully theirs. They continued bombing raids up until 30th March 1994 when the DRA was disbanded after realising that Dahla prospered more under Sutherway's rule.

Government and Politics

The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy, with executive power exercised on behalf of the monarch by the prime minister and other cabinet ministers who head departments. The cabinet, including the prime minister, and other ministers collectively make up Her Majesty's Government. These ministers are drawn from and are responsible to Parliament, the legislative body, which is traditionally considered to be "supreme" (that is, able to legislate on any matter and not bound by decisions of its predecessors). The United Kingdom is one of the few countries in the world today that does not have a codified constitution, relying instead on traditional customs and separate pieces of constitutional law.

While the monarch is head of state and theoretically holds all executive power, it is the prime minister who is the head of government. The government is answerable chiefly to the House of Commons, from which constitutional convention requires that the prime minister be drawn. The majority of cabinet members are from the House of Commons, the rest from the House of Lords. Ministers do not, however, legally have to come from Parliament, though that is the modern day custom. The Member of Parliament (MP) who commands a majority in the House of Commons is normally appointed prime minister - usually the leader of the largest party or, if there is no majority party, the largest coalition. The current prime minister is Derek Walloway of the Sutherway National Party, who has been in office since 2001.

In the United Kingdom, the monarch has extensive theoretical powers, but his/her role is mainly, though not exclusively, ceremonial. The monarch is an integral part of Parliament (as the "Crown-in-Parliament") and theoretically gives Parliament the power to meet and create legislation. An Act of Parliament does not become law until it has been signed by the monarch (known as Royal Assent), although not one has refused assent to a bill that has been approved by Parliament since Queen Delaire in 1954. Although the abolition of the monarchy has been suggested, the popularity of the monarchy remains strong in the United Kingdom. Support for a Sutherway republic usually fluctuates between 5% and 10% of the population, with roughly 8% undecided or indifferent. The current monarch is Queen Mary IV & King James VII who acceded to the throne in 1944 and was crowned in 1946.

Parliament is the national legislature of the United Kingdom. It is the ultimate legislative authority in the United Kingdom, according to the doctrine of parliamentary sovereignty (however, questions over sovereignty have been brought forward because of the United Kingdoms's entry in to the USCN). It is bicameral, composed of the elected House of Commons and the unelected House of Lords, whose members are mostly appointed. The House of Commons is the more powerful of the two houses. The House of Commons houses 410 members who are directly elected from single-member constituencies based on population. The House of Lords has 536 members (though this number is not fixed). The Church of Sutherway is the established church of the state in Sutherway.

The Palace of Holyrood, overlooking the Basislack Bay, Kirkcaldy, houses the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Since the 1900's, the two largest political parties in British politics have been the Sutherway National Party and Labour Party. Though coalition and minority governments have been an occasional feature of Parliamentary politics, the first-past-the-post electoral system used for general elections tends to maintain the dominance of these two parties, though each has in the past century relied upon a third party to deliver a working majority in Parliament. The Sutherway Socialist Party are the third largest party in the Sutherway parliament and actively seek a reform of the electoral system to address the dominance of the two-party system.

Many in the United Kingdom consider themselves 'Unitish' as well as but, more commonly, 'Sutherwish' or 'Dahlian'. Occupation and of the former Republic of Dahla in 1878 caused the creation of the Dahlian Republican Army (DRA) to compete demands for a free Dahla and continued union with Sutherway has brought civil strife and political instability up to the present day including, but not limited to, terror attacks and kidnappings.

Though 'nationalist' (as opposed to 'unionist') tendencies have shifted over time in Dahla, with the Dahla Independance Party founded in 1905, a serious political crisis threatening the integrity of the United Kingdom as a state has not occurred since the 1970s. Dahla possesses a legislature and government alongside that of the United Kingdom which was set up in 1987. However, this increased autonomy and devolution of executive and legislative powers has not contributed to a reduction in support for independence from the United Kingdom, with the rise of new pro-independence parties.

Parliament Buildings in Stormont, Dahla, seat of the Dahla Parliament to devolution with the wider United Kingdom have had only little resonance in Sutherway. There is currently little appetite for a devolved Sutherway parliament, although senior Labour and Sicialists have voiced concerns in regard to the Stormont Question, which is raised where certain policies for Sutherway are set by MPs from all Dahla whereas similar policies for Dahla might be decided in the devolved assemblies by legislators from those countries alone. Alternate proposals for Sutherway regional government have stalled, following a poorly received referendum on devolved government for the North East of Sutherway, which had hitherto been considered the region most in favour of the idea. Sutherway is therefore governed according to the balance of parties across the whole of the United Kingdom. This is currantly being debated in Parliament and Sutherway matters may soon only be voted on by Sutherway MP's other than the cabinet.

The resurgence in Celtic language and identity, as well as 'regional' politics and development, have contributed to forces pulling against the unity of the state. However, there is at present little sign of any imminent 'crisis'. Nevertheless many in Dahla would like independence although most Sutherwish do not.

United SimCity Nations (USCN)

Sutherway is the holder of the 2nd seat after helping to found the USCN on 16th April, 2006.

Northwestern Alliance

Was one of the three founding members of the Northern Alliance. It has found the alliance to be very stagnant and recently voted on whether to continue within the union. It passed but only narrowly so another vote will be held later in the hope of the partnership moving on.

It removed itself from the allience when moving to Adria but still holds close ties with Muyangguniang.

Adrian Union

Since moving to the Adrian continent, it became a priority of the Sutherway Government to become a member of the Adrian Union. It is seen as a more prolific alliance and has much in common with the nation of Sutherway.

As of October 2nd 2007, Sutherway was a member. The date coincides with the unions second birthday.

Law

The United Kingdom has three main systems of law. Sutherway Law, which applies in Sutherway, and Dahlian Law, which applies in Dahla, are based on common-law principles. UK law extends across the whole of Uinted Kindoms land including crown dependencies. Else Law, which is the name given to law that applies in seperate crown dependancies only, is a hybrid system based on both common-law, local customs and civil-law principles. The Act of Union guarantees the continued existence of a separate law system for the crown dependancies - this can sometimes be overuled by UK Law if deemed appropriate.

The Appelate Committee of the House of Lords (usually just referred to as "The House of Lords") is the highest court in the land for all criminal and civil cases in Sutherway, Dahla and for all civil cases in Else Law.

In Sutherway, the court system is headed by the Supreme Court of Judicature of Sutherway, consisting of the Court of Appeal, the High Court of Justice (for civil cases) and the Crown Court (for criminal cases). In Dahla, the chief courts are the Court of Session, for civil cases, and the High Court of Justiciary, for criminal cases, while the sheriff court is the Dahlian equivalent of the county court.

The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council is the highest court of appeal forthe UK overseas territories, and the Crown Dependencies.

Geography

A rough guide of the UK with two over-sea territories
A rough guide of the UK with two over-sea territories

Climate

The climate of Sutherway differs throughout. The warm ocean currant to the South keeps the bottom of the country warm and mostly dry.

Winds from the North first hit the mountains in the North. This is a colder area due to the higher altitude. The area is also wetter as storm clouds following the wind are 'broken' but the hills and rain before reaching the Southern plains.

Demographics

Population

The population of Sutherway is estimated to be around 21,735,900 from the 2001 Census of 21,545,360 . The increase has been attributed to a higher influx of immigrants seeking oppertunities in Sutherway's prosperous economy. Larger benefits for families and a healthier lifestyle - leading to longer life expectancy - are also thought to have been key factors.

Ethnic Group Percentage of total Sutherway population
White Sutherwish 91.6% (includes population of Cinosanap, Dahla and the Muyan Islands)
White Other 5.27%
Adrian 1.3%
Muyangguniang 0.8%
Mixed race 0.93%
Other 0.1%

Language

English, although the most widely spoken language, is not the official language. That honour lies with Scots Gaelic. Dwindling user of the language in recent years has spurred the government into action and it is now a compulsory language in the educatyion system. Immigrants have brought their own languages into the population but are not widely spoken.

Religion

The country has never been at the frontline of religion with attendance at religious buildings and services consistantly low for centuries. The 'problem' has gotten worse in recent years as people have become more modern and open-minded. Immigration has kept the fall lower, though.

Economy

A very strong economy but is not growing as quickly as it has in the past (presently a 2.4% increase/year).

Major Exports: Fossil Fuels, Chemicals, Textiles, Computers, Alcoholic Drinks

Major Imports: Foreign cars, Fruit, Steel, Iron, Tea

Trade Partners

Sutherway makes an effort to trade with most USCN nations but is specified in certain areas because of demand. The largest partners are the Adrian Union nations, UBS and Muyangguniang. Heil, Nicholls and Newport are other trade parties with significant links to Sutherway.

Due to embargoes put on Aosta by many nations, Sutherway decided to benefit by allowing companies to exploit loopholes in the embargoes. These loopholes allowed companies to trade with Aosta by declaring Aosta as a seperate destination from Sutherway or other nations. By the time the oversite was noticed and embargoes lifted, Sutherway had benefited a lot from extra trade.

Currancy

The official currency of Sutherway is the Sutherway and Dahla Pound (SDP) (δ) which currently trades at α0.7572. If Sutherway is admitted into the Adrian Union it is hoped that the Adria will run as a parallel currency with both being accepted as a form of payment for purchases in the country.

Transport

Public transport is widely used in Sutherway's urban towns and citiess but is less so in more rural areas. The most popular form of transport is still the motor car - suspected to be because of it's ease of use and A to B possibilites. Improving public trabsport and fears of climate change have created a slight dip in car ownership (even though human-caused global warming is not recognised by the Sutherway government) but most Sutherwish still own a car even if they use public transport day to day.

Port Victoria, Port Victoria is the SimWorld's largest port for trade and travel. This is due to it being close to Sutherway's two largest cities (rail and road takes it to Kikcaldy) and being the most direct and cost effective route to many other inland areas in East Central Adria.

Port Victoria International Airport (PVI) currently has 29 million passeneger movements to international and internal destinations all year.

Other large airports in the nation are:

  • Port Victoria International (PVI)

Military

The armed forces of the United Kingdom are known as the Monarch Armed Forces, but officially Armed Forces of the Crown of Sutherway and Dahla. Their Commander-in-Chief is the reigning monarch and they are managed by the Ministry of Defence. The armed forces are controlled by the Defence Council currently headed by Air Chief Marshal Sir A.R. Sole.

The United Kingdom fields one of the most powerful and comprehensive armed forces in the world and claims the largest, most powerful navy of the USCN and, arguably, the best trained troops in the world. It has significant global power projection capabilities, with total allied naval tonnage second to none. The UK spends only 8% of its annual budget on military expenditure in the world.

The United Kingdom possesses a comprehensive nuclear arsenal, one of the small number of countries to do so, utilising the submarine-based Dreamweaver II Ballistic Missile System with nuclear warheads. These DURA (Defence, Underwater, Retaliate, Attack) class submarines were designed and built by SDA (now SADDA Systems Submarines) at Barrow-in-Furness.

The armed forces are charged with protecting the United Kingdom and its overseas territories, promoting the United Kingdom's wider security interests, and supporting international peacekeeping efforts. They are active and regular participants in coalition operations especially USCN missions.

The Monarch Navy operates six nuclear submarines armed with the Dreamweaver II nuclear missiles. There 3 currantly being built and 4 submarines not in use can easily be repaired to carry if neccessary. There are also reserve forces supporting the regular military. These include an army reserve, the Monarch Ground Reserve (MeGA); the Monarch Naval Reserve (MoNaR), Monarch Marines Back-Up (MoMBU) and the Monarch Reserve for the Air Force (MoRTAF). About 6% of the regular armed forces is made up of women, a figure that is higher for the reserve forces.

The United Kingdom Special Forces, principally the Special Attack Service (SAS) and Special Marine Service (SMS), but including others, provide troops trained for quick, mobile, military responses in counter-terrorism, land, maritime and amphibious operations; often where secrecy or covert operations are required. The Merdian Navy is the largest navy in the world in terms of gross tonnage. Despite the United Kingdom's wide-ranging capabilities, recent pragmatic defence policy has a stated assumption that "the most demanding operations" would be undertaken as part of a coalition although the last war in which the Monarch Military fought alone was the Mayan Islands Invasion of 2006, with full-scale combat operations lasting only three days.

It recently allied it's navy with Muyangguniang to help in offence and defense of the two countries. This has created a navy that is twice as powerful as any other single nation and the largest united navy.

Allies

Sutherway has always tried to be a peaceful but is always ready for action if it is needed. It holds closest ties with Muyangguniang and the Adrian union, especially Georgiapolis. It also considers Newport, Nicholls, UBS and Heil among it's other closest 'friends'. It has embassies in all USCN nations plus other outwith the union.

With Aosta's continuing presence being felt in the USCN, Sutherway has felt it will benefit being an ally with it. The two countries are similiar in the way they work and, after Aosta's invasion of Heil and Giorgiopolis pulling out, Sutherway gathered troops to help stablies the country. The partnership gets stronger by the day.

Enemies

Although one of it's closest allies, Georgiapolis has often been on the end of a Sutherway diplomatic offensive. These have included, but are not limited to, the size of the USCN HQ in Georgiapolis, the USCN revolution and the 'invitation only' status of the Adrian continent.

There are no actual enemies of the state but Penatra has often infuriated Sutherway with it's policies with Cantopho rising as a challanger on Sutherway's irretation list to Penatra. It has also shown concern for the invasion of North Ionia and the motives behind it.

After the Barbarry Coast expelled all foreign nationals, Sutherway became weary of it's neighbour. It froize all assets - public and personnal - and orderred all Barbarry nationals, or those who had recently been living in Barbarry, to attend holding centres where they were questioned to find out the reasoning behind Barbarry's act. It is currantly on-going.

Due to the ever expanding USCN member list, Sutherway has had to keep it's friends close while still make advances on the new nations.

Culture

Education and Science

A forefront in education and has some of the highest percentage of graduates per person. Famous institutions of education include College of Information Technology, East Sutherway (CITES), University of Kirkcaldy, University of Human Developement, and Further College of Forth Bay along with others.

In 2006 it was reported Sutherway was the most productive source of research in the SimWorld after Heil with large shares of scientific research papers and citations.

Literature

With English being the most used language in the SimWorld, Sutherway has had a large advantage over some nations in getting it's writing to a wider, world-wide audience.

In the past, theories and inventions were the largest selling books but this has since changed to the modern world with story novels becoming the most popular by far.

Song writing is known throughout the SimWorld as one of Sutherway's popular interest stregnths as music is a big interest in Sutherway with many people aspiring to form bands and become artists. Although many do not make it, venues are packed week-in, week-out with acts and audeineces from all over.

Cinima

Although there is not a large cinima scene running out of Sutherway, it has become significant as a location for filming. Competitive filming prices and it's close location to Georgiopolis has brought a lot of money through added tourism to the country.

Design and Architecture

Home to many important architectural firm including Kingdom Design, Smith, Fuster and Co, Universal Building Company, and Architect International.

Many people have noted Sutherway's unique style in it's building design's and city planning (where it is planned). The government has continued this theme into the 21st Century by selecting architectural firms planning applications with 'Sutherway Style' as a category. This does not mean Sutherway is not open to world styles and this is most evident in Little Adria, Kirkcaldy and the suburbs of most cities. Port Voctoria has a more American appearance as it was extensivally redeveloped during the late 20th Century and now has many large open spaces and less dense urban envirnoments.

Music

With music being one of the most popular pastimes of the population it is undoubtably one of the major players on the world map. With rock a firm favourite but a large following in many areas spanning from rap to opera to trance - which has crossed borders from other Adrian nations where it is more popular.

Many up and coming bands play gigs anywhere with many even playing small stadiums without becoming popular nation-wide.

K-Fest (Kirkcaldy Music Festival) is the largest music festival of it's kind in the SimWorld and is held annually over a week. It attracts followers from all over the world allowing it to expand to over 64 venues (3 stadiums, 5 large open sites, 11 small open sites, 5 theatres and many small venues such as pubs and clubs). It has recently expanded into other fields with comedy becoming a firm favourite as a secondary activity.

Media

A large exporter of TV and radio programs. Important location for the film industry.

Home to Sutherway Television (Stv) which broadcasts an unrivalled amount of channels to the SimWorld. It is funded by a television license paid for by everyone in Sutherway (around δ135).

Sport

The national sport of Sutherway is floorball although football is more widely played. Other sports played include rugby, ice hockey, cricket and basketball but others are played. The government are addiment in making Sutherway the world capital of sport and hosting the SimCup IV is the biggest step so far along with the regenration of Sutherway's sporting facilities. Although many people activelly play sport, the government has set an ambitious 75% as the target for 2010.

SimCup IV will have many sports running along side it and it is rumoured that Sutherway may bid for the Simlympics is the distant future.

Floorball

Federation of Sutherway Floorball (FSF) is the ruling body of floorball in Sutherway. It governs the game within the country and controles the national team. It also takes care of finances and such.

The floorball league is split into three main divisions (the top division remains the only professional league in the world) and then goes into regional divisions. There are also two ladies divisions and regional junior divisions. Dahlian teams compete in their own regional division.

Sutherway is also home to the SCBF (SimCity Board of Floorball) which is the international body for floorball. The only nations included in the SCBF are Sutherway and Dahla - these are included as seperate nations - but it hopes to expand in the future.

With Sutherway being the only nation that plays the sport to a high, proffesional level, it is currently ranked first in the world rankings.

Football

Football is the most popular sport in Sutherway as it can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities.

The international team is considered to be one of the better teams in the world and has reached the final of the first SimCup in Newport, only to loose to Muyangguniang in the final 1-0. It competed in SimCup Georgiapolis and has reached the knockout stages - although suffered a surprising 4-2 defeat to the host. It has competed in numerous friendlies and the B-Team recently narrouly lost to the Newport first team 1-0.

Sutherway succesfully bidded for the SimCup IV and the tournament will start once the rennovation of the city has taken place which includes the construction of stadia. Many new stadium are being built with other redeveloped. It is hoped that this will be a platform for people, who weren't before, to take up a sport.

The league is structured into 4 leagues. The top league, the most watched in the SimWorld, is the Premier League with the lower leagues named Division One - Three. Dahlian teams play in their own leagues. The most succesful team is Kirkcaldy Thistle having one dozens of league and cup championships.

Striker Taylor Smith topped the scorers league in the first two SimCups.

At the time of writing, Sutherway stood at 3rd in the rankings behind Newpot and Georgiopolis.

Rugby

The third biggest sport in Sutherway after football and floorball respectivally. It is more popular in the hilly uplands of the North and Northwest but is still enjoyed in other areas. The national stadium stands in Dahla city and is unique in the fact that it is the only national sport stadium for Sutherway in the prinicpality. This is due to Dahla competing under the Sutherway umbrella and it's close proximity to the more prevailent areas of interest.

Ice Hockey

A popular sport - especially in Dahla - with highest attendences around the breaks in the floorball league calender. Many ice hockey players also enjoy floorball as it helps to develope stick skills and fitness.

Symbols

The national animal is the Kelpie (or Water Horse) and ppears on the coat of arms (so flag) and other the currency as well as other things.
