Beck Hansen (born Bek David Campbell), better known as Beck, is an American musician, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Beck has been hailed by critics throughout his musical career as being amongst the most creative and idiosyncratic musicians of 1990s and 2000s alternative rock.

Beck and the White Stripes go way back:

  • 2002: Apparently, Jack really liked the music video for Beck's "Devil's Haircut", and wished to work with its director, Mark Romanek, on the video for "Fell in Love with a Girl". Their label mistakenly hired the legendary Michel Gondry, which ended up not being a problem, as he directed the video for another Beck song, "Deadweight", which Jack also liked. Gondry went on to direct three more videos for the band.
  • 2002: Jack shows up at a Beck & Smokey Hormel show in August in Ann Arbor, MI to play "Last Fair Deal Gone Down", "Cold Brains", and this ditty from the 1960s spy sitcom Get Smart.
  • 2003: Beck appears in the video for "The Hardest Button to Button".
  • 2003: Beck covers "Black Math" twice on his European summer tour in 2003 (August 7 in Urbino, August 21 in Brixton).
  • 2003: Meg shows up in a photo gallery on Beck's website, hanging out with Beck and his band on a boat in Australia. I'm relying on Whiskeyclone.net for this info, as The Wayback Machine has been unable to help me uncover these lost gems.
  • 2005: Jack co-writes and plays bass on "Go It Alone", on Beck's album Guero. Beck was asked about the collaboration, and said Jack walked in, picked up a bass, started playing, and they literally took five minutes to put the song together. He also has said that Jack was in town for a few nights, and they messed around together, creating songs, and this was the idea that "bore fruit."
  • 2005: On August 17, Beck made a surprise appearance in the encore of the White Stripes' show at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles to play his song "Cold Brains" as well as playing bass on "The Denial Twist". (Get the full show here.)
  • 2007: The White Stripes release "Conquest", the third single from Icky Thump, as a series of 7" colored vinyl singles. The tracks "It's My Fault for Being Famous", "Honey, We Can't Afford to Look This Cheap", and "Cash Grab Complications on the Matter" appear on the black, white, and red versions of the records, respectively, with the latter featuring an acoustic mariachi version of "Conquest". These various B-sides were co-produced by Beck and were recorded in his living room in Los Angeles (in this house, presumably, although some say Nashville). Beck also contributed vocals and piano to "Being Famous" and slide guitar to "Honey".
  • 2012: A Beck remix of "The Hardest Button to Button" shows up on a Beck, Josh Homme & Mark Lanegan 7" from Third Man Records' From the Vault series.
