Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a comic horror/fantasy show that aired from 1997-2003. It is centered on the title character, Buffy Summers, one of a long line of Slayers, teenage girls and young women gifted with the supernatural strength and fighting prowess needed to combat vampires, demons, and other supernatural threats to humankind. Buffy, like other slayers before her, is accompanied by a Watcher, Rupert Giles, a trainer and counselor sent by the Watchers' Council. Buffy further surrounds herself with a circle of friends – some with superpowers, others without, collectively known as the Scooby Gang or the Scoobies – who help her in her fight.

The series is set in the fictional city of Sunnydale, California, somewhere northwest of Los Angeles. The city is significant because Sunnydale High School sits atop one of several Hellmouths scattered around the globe. The Hellmouth serves as a supernatural nexus point and a gateway to any of a number of demon planes, and it attracts all manner of vampires and other demons to Sunnydale for Buffy to fight.

In 1999 Buffy spawned a spinoff TV show, Angel, which ran until 2004.
