Scientific cycle
Beginning point:
- 1) observations of the shared observable logical physical world (descriptions)
- 2) invent falsifiable hypothesis's to explain the descriptions
- 3) test the hypothesis using experimental method
- 4a) hypothesis is falsified. either the hypothesis is modified and retested at step 3, or the hypothesis is thrown out and a new hypothesis is invented at step 2.
- 4b) hypothesis is repeatedly verified. with the support of the scientific community, many of whom will be carrying out these repeated experiments, a repeatedly verified hypothesis becomes a theory.
- 5) theories are then used to explain the original (and new) observed phenomena in step 1. the theories are verifiable. additionally, theories must agree with each other, scinece is a sontinous framwork.
Scientific knowledge
steps 5 and 1 represent Scientific knowledge:
- verifiability is the key attribute of this knowledge
Scientific method
steps 2-4 represent the Scientific method:
- the theory that explains this knowledge must be falsifiable
Induction
going from step 1 to step 5 is an inductive procedure.
Deduction
going from Step 5 to step 1 is a deductive procedure.
Applied Science
it is possible to apply the Scientific Knowledge gained practically; to achieve normative goals
- physics -> engineering
- biology -> medicine
or more generally
- science -> technology
