[edit] Review

Midtown Madness is 1999 computer game that takes place in Chicago. The player can race around or simply create havoc in cruise mode. The vehicles included range from the VW Beetle to a bus to a Panoz race car.

The gameplay is great, if not a little too challenging in some places. Police chases add a lot of thrills to the gameplay. Be warned that if you want a fair chance of outrunning the cops, pick a Ford Mustang. Racing is also very exciting too.

There are three modes of racing: checkpoint races (like a road rally), circuit races (a race around an area of the city), and blitz races (racing from point to point within a certain amount of time).

If you do not want to race, you can also try cruise mode. In cruise, you can drive around the city and do whatever you'd like. This is handy for getting associated with Chicago.

Perhaps the game's most annoying flaw is low AI (or no AI for that matter). Traffic will mindlessly swerve into when they should swere out of your way. The police will (seriously) plow through traffic (yes, the people they should be protecting) just to keep up with you. Another irritating feature is the cops' ability to have boosts of speed.

Also to its mild demerit, there are only a few cars. And in police chases, only three cops can pursue you at one time. What is also annoying is that the police only chase you, and never your opponents.

Despite its flaws, Midtown Madness is a definite must-have for any mayhem-loving gamer junkie.
