Help:Signatures

From Randomramblings

How to Sign Your Name

Signing your name to a talk page is remarkably simple. Simply type four tildes (~~~~) after your message, or use the "sign" button  (button_sig.png) above the edit box. When the message is saved, your name and date is stamped in their place. You can also use three tildes to write just your name, or five tildes to insert only a timestamp. Four tildes, however, is preferred to three.

Why to Sign Your Name

A wiki is not like a forum; you have no idea who inserts what comments where unless you give people some indication of who wrote what. It is theoretically possible to look at the article history to see who wrote what, but this is really only useful for a single revision, and even that's annoying. God help us if there's more than one revision that needs sorting out.

Fancy Signatures for the Super-Leet

You may have noticed that Hinoa's signature is in a different font and has a link to his talk page as well. These "fancy sigs" are particularly common at Uncyclopedia--you can go there to see examples. To make one of your own, follow the following steps. NOTE: This requires some rudimentary knowledge of HTML or CSS.

  1. Create a subpage for your signature. An example: User:Hinoa/sig
  2. Create your signature with links to your userpage and wherever else you feel like.
  3. Go to your preferences page, and in the "nickname" box add {{nosubst|User:yourname/sig}}. Tick the "Raw signatures (without automatic link)" box, click the save button, and you're done! Use the 4 tildes or signature button (button_sig.png) to use your saved signature.
