Plot Summary

"A lovefeast seeks to strengthen the bonds and the spirit of harmony, goodwill, and congeniality, as well as to forgive past disputes and instead love one another." —Wikipedia

At the Institution for Training in the Arts of Death, people who have renounced their former lives struggle to maintain their own personages while training to become Gods of Death. The history of the Institute is interwoven with many successes but also with many complex relationships and personal hardships, so it becomes easy to lose sight of good, mercy, and the highest of loves—especially when one lives to deal with death and that beyond.

This comic was created not only for the sake of action and beauty in diversity (and sometimes comedy as well), but to see how such normal people would undergo their transformation to Gods of Death while still being themselves. How do their morals adjust? How is their view of the world affected? What new phenomena do they discover? Are they limited, or have they been made more free?

And will Shinigami history repeat itself?

"Eat, drink, and be merry...for tomorrow, you die."

Types of Shinigami

Part of the reason the original Shinigami of the world were unorganized and ineffective is because they did not know their strengths. One's Shinigami type is usually best manifested in gemstones' response to their bodies, and gemstone training is brought about in Discovery 1000.

  • Clash Shinigami

"to engage in a physical conflict or contest, as in a game or a battle... to strike with a resounding or violent collision"

The most common (and, when untrained, weakest) kind of Shinigami, Clash Shinigami slay people and souls by use of a weapon. Most Shinigami Obigami originally oversaw were this type. These are the only type that are given smaller Divine Instruments in-training, and unlike the original Shinigami, they have the aid of enchantments to ease the removal of the soul. These types are usually large and develop many horns.

Gem - Pyrite: Clash Shinigami are told to shine bright. Stores of energy for their efforts are kept in the stones.

  • Murmur Shinigami

"a low, continuous sound, as of a brook, the wind, or trees..."

Once more common, they coax the soul out with special words. It is far harder than it sounds, and they often must be equipped with bodily skill to handle a soul that has been coaxed surreptitiously from a body. This skill is often a pair with Clash, and also can be of great aid to Sound with the ability to unweave curses. These types change the least physically in their transition to Shinigami.

Gem - Lapis Luzuli: Murmur Shinigami find that many words unravel when they focus on the stones and the spirits.

  • Heart Shinigami

"the firmness of will or the callousness required to carry out an unpleasant task or responsibility

Despite their name, they are a very dangerous and painfully-met Shinigami, able to cause humans to die with the onset of sudden vicious diseases. Theirs is a skill difficult to master. Many use the aids of special poisons invented within the Institute and historically. These types are sometimes small and have tiny horns but long tails.

Gem - Tourmaline: Heart Shinigami turn to multicolored tourmaline to draw up all the sickness they have gathered for their own usage.

  • Claw Shinigami

"a sharp, usually curved, nail on the foot of an animal, as on a cat, dog, or bird"

A liked kind, the Claw-type specializes in using harnessed animal spirits to do his/her bidding. They are agile of body and tend to make friends easily. They are also the closest to mages, since their animal spirits sometimes have slightly elemental properties (ex: most canines are neutral; a snow leopard is water; a komodo dragon is fire). Summoning a captured animal spirit takes some of the summoner's spirit to maintain and thus limits what can be summoned at once. This type changes the most physically in transition, with the development of scales or fur (or both) and the half or complete look of an animal.

Gems - Carnelian, Ruby, Jasper: Claw Shinigami store the hot spirits of their found animal (and plant) spirits in this gemstone.

  • Ero Shinigami

eros: "creative, often sexual yearning, love, or desire"

Sometimes called "Succubi" or "Incubi" by humans, these Shinigami (somewhat popular and taboo in the Institute) cause people to die in their sleep by sleeping with them. (It is not sure whether or not it is the sex itself which kills them, or a change in bodily state as they lie.) Most Shinigami enjoy this role. These types are typically slender and very physically attractive. Many grow long hair.

Gems - Sugilite, Amethyst: Ero Shinigami are told to charge their sexual energy into the stones and keep them safe.

  • State Shinigami

"the condition of a physical system with regard to phase, form, composition, or structure... a particular condition of mind or feeling"

One of the most powerful kinds of Shinigami, State Shinigami (sometimes referred to as State-Change) cause unnatural body-changing alchemy in their victims. Their powers are used rarely so as not to disturb the common human world, but had wider-spread usage in the days of Obigami. State-Changers have been known to turn their victim's blood to acid or lead in accordance to some loose moral holding that the person violated. They have also had gazes that turned people to stone or salt, and have breathed sulfur to cause insides to shrivel and dry. They can alter the state of nonliving things at times as well. These types have the quickest reaction time. They also resemble Heart-types in appearance.

Gems - Malachite, Turquoise: State Shinigami must be very close to the green earth in order to manipulate it.

  • Sound Shinigami

"free from injury, damage, defect, disease... having no defect as to truth, justice, wisdom, or reason... free from moral defect or weakness; upright, honest, or good"

These Shinigami are not killers but rather healers and purifiers. They are sometimes referred to as "Angels" by humans. They remove infirmities from the bodies of otherwise helpless people and purify cursed souls. They Send souls off to Purgatory when other types are unable to and hence are often assistants. These sometimes look minimal, like Murmur types, but sometimes grow small horns and vestigial wings.

Gems - Quartz, Agate, Pearl: Sound Shinigami find purity in these varieties and draw on good thoughts.

Some people do not have Shinigami types and must do the job with extra effort (aka: with their own hands). Others have more than one, or all, of them, and thus are the most balanced out but also the hardest to refine, even if they focus on just one type.

Weapons

Used primarily by Clash Types, these weapons help claim the Souls of people and Oni alike. They are not actual physical weapons, but extensions of the Soul, and hence can be altered.

  • Slayr: A sword that extends length at will. Usually looks of pewter or steel. First-Time Soul Capture Rate: 85%
  • Reapr: A very sharp scythe. More recently double-ended. First-Time Soul Capture Rate: 85%
  • Gashr: An extendable spear that also comes in axe-headed varieties. Commonly used as javelins. First-Time Soul Capture Rate: 75%
  • Flingr: A bow, paired with a quiver (Flingr-load) whose stock never expires. Also comes in crossbow form (Cross-Flingr). First-Time Soul Capture Rate: 33%
  • Flayr: A whip, single- to multi-pronged at will, with the ability to take many souls at once. First-Time Soul Capture Rate: 95%
  • Bangr: A mace with an optional chain. First-Time Soul Capture Rate: 95%
  • Blastr: A handgun, rarely used by the Institution, filled with divine soul-capturing bullets. Requires precision to aim. First-Time Soul Capture Rate: 99%
  • Sayr: A wand or rod usually instilled with the properties of absorption or infliction. These can also take the forms of lightweight maces. First-Time Soul Capture Rate: 85%
