Given how universities operate, which of these is plays a greater role is largely a mystery and can vary from place to place. It is generally believed that for undergraduate admissions the SAT score and and academic transcripts are important, whereas for graduate admissions the statement of purpose and recommendation letters may be crucial. It should be noted that most, if not all, of the standardized tests are administered by [[ETS]], which updates the test formats every few years. As a result, universities are often hesitant in accepting the new format, or it takes time for them to formulate policies regarding old test scores vs. new test scores.
