The following is based on the advisory issued by UTPD. They may sound a bit paranoid, but they are largely based on real-life bad experiences. Better safe than sorry.

* Travel with someone you know and trust, and preferably with a larger group. Never allow members of your party to leave alone with strangers. Always travel in well-lighted areas.

* Don't carry all of your credit or bank cards in your wallet or purse. Carry the minimum amount of cash that you will need, including a little backup. Traveler's checks are your best bet when on vacation. If you have extra cash, leave it in your hotel room, hidden from sight. Many hotels have courtesy safes inside many of the rooms.

-
* Make sure your friends and relatives know where you will be vacationing, when you will depart, and when you expect to return. Call friends or family members to let them know that you have arrived and returned safely.
+
-
* If you are robbed, don't resist - give up any money, jewelery, or other valuables. You can always replace material things! Call 911 as soon as you can (if in the US).

Have You Secured Your Dorm, Home or Car?

-
* Have you set the light timers to go on at designated times? These will make it seem like someone is home even when you are away on vacation. Such timers can be checked out FREE of charge from any police department (in the US).

-
* Windows &  doors locked? (don't leave a spare key hidden outside your room)

-
* Answering machine on, telephone ringer off? (don't leave a message saying that you are gone)

-
* Let someone at home or a trusted neighbor know where you are staying and how to reach you.

-
* If leaving your car, make sure you park it in a safe, legal spot. Remember to remove all of your personal property from inside your vehicle.

-
* If taking your car, check your car's belts, oil, hose, & tires.

-
* Make sure you have enough gas & money to arrive at your destination & return home.

-
When booking a trip, avoid becoming a victim of scams such as paying extra fees that were not originally agreed upon, not receiving accommodations promised as part of the travel package, or in the worst case finding out that the "company" disappeared without a trace.

*  Book your trip through a company you are familiar with or that someone else has used and referred you to.
+
-
* Get a contract in writing that states what you have agreed upon verbally.
+
-
* Always read the fine print.
+
-
* Be cautious in believing what you are told. If it seems to good to be true, it probably is.
+
-
* Make sure the dates you want to travel are the dates the tickets are issued for.
+
-
* Don’t pay in cash; instead pay using a credit card. If you use your credit card to pay and the services you contracted for are not provided, you may not be liable for the charge on your card.
+
-
* Watch out for vouchers - steer clear on companies which ask you to redeem vouchers or certificates.
