A lot of foreign applicants apply to schools without ever setting foot on campus; a stark contrast when compared to say the US applicants applying in North America - they visit almost all the schools they apply to, attend 'taster lectures', get a flavor of the school, its environment etc. Since Pakistani applicants do not always have that luxury, having an alum who can pass on some information can definitely help the cause.
