Sumeragi Subaru was born in Kyoto a few minutes after his twin sister Hokuto on February 19,1974. He and his sister were both raised by his grandmother on the family estate until he was eight years old. He spent a year in Tokyo training to become the next head of the clan. He was drawn away from where he’d been waiting for her one day and wandered into one of the illusions of the Sakurazukamori. After a failed attempt to exorcise the tree he saw Seishirou with one of his victims. Because of an innocently posed question, Seishirou made a bet with him that day, marked him and let him go after erasing his memories of the events. Subaru was made to wear an enchanted pair of gloves for the next seven years when his grandmother saw the marks on his hands.
Seven years later, he’s residing in Tokyo with his twin and balancing both work and school. While chasing after a shikigami one day he collided with Seishirou in a train station. Subaru became fast friends with him partly due to his work as veterinarian since one of Subaru’s dreams had to been to be a zookeeper. His sister Hokuto was forever playing matchmaker for the two of them. And so the year of the bet progressed with Subaru becoming ever closer to Seishirou as the older man helped and protected him on his jobs.
However everything changed when Seishirou stepped in the way of a mentally unstable woman who tried to stab Subaru because her son needed a kidney. Seishirou was stabbed in the eye and this devastated the sixteen year old Subaru. This event along with a discussion with a blind man and his sister caused him to realize he was in love with Seishirou just before he walked into the older man’s illusion. Seishirou had decided it was time to call in the bet and unlocked the memories of their earlier meeting before he broke Subaru’s arm and told it had the same meaning as breaking a cup. Subaru’s grandmother managed to break the illusion at the cost of her mobility and Subaru was catatonic.
Hokuto was distraught over this and resolved to bring him out of it deciding to take his place and confront Seishirou. Subaru remained catatonic for the next two months before he woke one day yelling her name. A few minutes later his grandmother received a phone call reporting that Hokuto was dead and Subaru dropped out of school resolving that he would kill Seishirou.
Nine years later we find Subaru back in Tokyo a totally different person. His sole goal seems to be tracking Seishirou. As one of the Seven Seals his job is also to protect Kamui. He first appears in book 6 but we only get a glimpse of him there. He has a fight with Seishirou soon after at Nakano sun plaza. When Kamui went within due to what happened with Kotori and Fuuma Subaru had to dive into his consciousness to bring him out and while he was in there Kamui saw the flashbacks to what happened between Hokuto and Seishirou. This created something of a bond between the two however tenuous.
