BASIC SYSTEM:

ACOL

Opening 1NT range:

12-14 (Vul and Non-Vul and in 4th seat)

Opening 2 Bids:
  • 2♣ = Strong (10 playing tricks)
  • 2♦, 2♥ and 2♠ = Weak Two (6-card suit + 6-9 HCP)

Opening 3 Bids:

Pre-emptive (7-card suit)

1NT Overcalls:

15-18 HCP (+ stopper in their suit)

Jump Overcalls:

Weak (6-card suit + 6-9 HCP)

Defence to 1NT:
  • 2♣ = 4-4 in Majors (or better)
  • 2♦, 2♥ and 2♠ = Natural
  • 2NT = 5-5 in Minors (or better)

Defence to Weak Twos:
  • 2NT = 16-18 balanced with a stopper
  • Double = Take-out (as for a double at the one-level)

Defence to 2♦ Multi:
  • 2NT = 19-21 balanced
  • 3NT = 22-24 balanced
  • Double = 16+ points, any shape except as for 2NT and 3NT bids
  • Suit bid = natural, good 5+ card suit, below 16 points

Defence to pre-empts:
  • Double = Take-out
  • 3NT = To Play

Slam Conventions:

Blackwood, Gerber, Cue Bids (showing Aces/Voids)

Other Conventions: Stayman, Transfers, Rigal, Fourth Suit Forcing, Unusual 2NT, Michaels

1NT Transfers:
  • 1NT:2♠ = "I have either 11 HCP or a long minor suit." Opener rebids:
    • 2NT with a weak hand i.e. 12 HCP. Partner then choses between passing or bidding a minor suit.
    • 3♣ with a strong hand i.e. 14 HCP. Partner then choses between 3NT, passing or bidding 3♦.
