George Jarvis
From Dittopedia
George Jarvis lived at Weston House (sometimes referred to as Mansion House), which he probably caused to be built, fairly close to the 'Harrow'. He retired there with his wife and daughter Mary in the middle of the 18th century. Jarvis took an active part in the community affairs of Thames Ditton, becoming a Surveyor of the Highways. [2]
Jarvis was a Herefordshire man who came to London for apprenticeship in the leather trade, as did two of his brothers. They succeeded in business, having formed their own company. They were eventually elected Masters of the Currier Companies. [2]
In July 1759, Jarvis's daughter Mary married Sir William Twysden (1707-1767), 6th Baronet of Roydon. George Jarvis's pride was slighted by the Twysdens, possibly because they took a poor view of "trade". As a consequence, he attempted to disinherit his daughter. He then put his money to the service of Herefordshire, and possibly died thinking there was 'Nothing like Leather'. [2]
