The Outside World

It does exist! The whole rest of the outside world is there, and they have Pokémon out there too, but they haven't gone so far as the regions in building their society around them. In the outside world, Pokémon are just animals, and they're nowhere near as prolific or densely packed as they are in the regions.

The regions have no international airports, and so can only be reached from the outside world by boat. They're off in a rather remote location in the Pacific Ocean, not shown on very many maps. As such, their tourism industry isn't exactly booming here. People coming from the outside world are very few and far between. The most notable would be Lieutenant Surge of Vermilion Gym, who was an American soldier.

Transportation

Due to the lay of the land, the most popular modes of transportation throughout the regions are bikes, motorbikes, and mopeds. Trucks are used to transport freight, and some larger families may own a car for convenience, but for the most part everyone who has a vehicle uses a bike or motorbike. Officer Jennies are well-known for using hoverbikes, which are rarely seen outside of the police force (they're very expensive).

Capitols will have public airports which allow quick travel from region to region, and a few cities have smaller, private airfields. Air travel is a rather unpopular choice unless one is traveling particularly far. Usually people take boats between regions instead.

The regions also have a subway system which passes through all the major cities of a region (but not between regions), and a surface railway system used only for transporting freight (which does travel between Kanto and Johto, the only two regions to share a land mass).

Language

The national language of the regions is English.

Government

The regions are not actually all held together under one government. Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn make up a confederation of self-governed states (Hoenn being a very recent addition to the group), and Sinnoh is a constitutional monarchy.

Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn operate as essentially independent republics, but have a central governing President. Each large city has a mayor and each region has a governor. The voting age is 18. If you ever want to discuss regional politics, assume it works much like the American political system and you'll be fine.

Sinnoh is not part of the republic-group of the other regions, but is its own country. Its government is a constitutional monarchy, headed by Sinnoh's royal family and governed by a prime minister and parliament. (Sound familiar? See Canada for a real-world example!) The current queen is Her Majesty Queen Astrid III, a bright and spritely woman in her fourties. The government tends to be elected every two to four years or so, depending on how much of a dick the PM is. There are three provinces in the country: Artesia, the western province, Lightwood, the eastern province, and Inuvik, the northern province (also containing the Battle Zone island). All the provinces have premiers in charge, and each large city has a mayor as well. The capital of the country is Jubilife City, and the Queen reigns from her palace near Hearthome City. The federal voting age is 16; provincial or municipal ages of majority may differ by region.
