D&D: You ask the barkeep what is the word around

You look at the barkeep. He was definitely a peasant before coming to own this place. Between his short blond hair and his muscular shape, you think it will be a shame in a few years that all barkeeps seems to go fat. He'd be more good looking though if he washed more often but that's a villager's life. That's a strange custom you never got used to in your years of roaming the surface.
You give the barkeep a seductive smile as he walks towards you with the glass he is cleaning. "Been a while since we've seen you. You look like you got something on your mind, lassie." The small smile on his face is not unwelcome nor is it unfamiliar. He's come to know you well over the years, and has learned to keep his wandering gaze brief.
"That may be. What's the word around," You say, not wanting to elaborate on your last escapade in the woods.
"Well, there's a few things around. The guards seem to always have troubles with something or the other. But you'd probably have ask them directly or indirectly" He says absently.
You sense he's got something else to say. "What are you not telling me?" you inquire as you enjoy deeply learning secrets. The barkeeps looks around the room. It's still busy though it's not overly crowded and the people there are either already drunk or are getting there in great haste. Nobody is really paying attention to the bar.
He continues, "well, it's sensitive information..."
You've been around the city long enough to look at someone wanting something. The humans might not know it but the elves of the world have a keener sense at reading people when they get enough practice. You wanna know what he will tell you but you're not entirely willing to pay for it. You're not poor by any shade but it's for good reasons you're looking for work.
D&D: You decide to pay for the information in another way
Ask him what his price is. Maybe it won't be too much.
