You are a resident of the small, unincorporated town of Big Ugly, WV. There are maybe 500 people in the town, of which about 50 are your age. You have just graduated high school, and are wondering what your future will hold for you.
"Congratulations on surviving high school," your father says from behind his newspaper. He's sitting in the recliner, across the dining room from you, and you don't detect much emotion in his voice. Being a worker in the local coal factory, he has a drab life. But at least he manages to support your family.
"Thanks," you reply in a dry tone.
