"I... I was standing right here, I think," you say, pointing to a spot about a foot to your left.

"Stand there," she says to you, indicating the spot you'd mentioned. Turning away from you, she addresses the man still standing by the table in front of the window.

"Jensen, are you-" she begins.

"Already on it, ma'am," he replies, leaning over the table. "I don't know, though, you said that portal was one-time only, and one way. If what you told me is true it shouldn't be possible."

"What does the map say?"

"Hard to tell. If it really is another portal, it could go anywhere. Maybe somewhere worse than here."

"Unicorns and ravens doesn't sound any worse than were were are now, captain, wouldn't you say?"

"I wouldn't know about that, ma'am," he replies. "None of us have ever been anywhere else."

The woman in the chair, Marill, turns back to you. "I don't know if you understand any of what's going on," she says, and there may not be time to explain. But what you came through is what we- what I- call a portal. Its sort of a corridor between different realities. The spiders could do it, move between worlds, but... none of that matters. As you can probably tell we're in a tight spot. Those of us in this room should be safe but the rest of my people aren't. If you came through one way, maybe we can go back to where you came from."

She pauses and looks at you, and you hope your face doesn't give away how bewildered you feel. You have no idea what she's talking about.

"Things here are... breaking down. All of us here are prepared to die, but there's a difference between maybe dying for a good cause and certianly dying for nothing which is what will happen if we stay here. Its entirely possible that, even if I can get your portal open again from this end, that it'll be unstable and we might die anyway. To complicate matters, there are the creatures. To have any chance at all of getting anybody but us out, a good part of my people will have to sacrifice themselves. There were made to be soldiers, so they're okay with that. I'm not."

It seems she isn't sure what to do. It looks like the deciding vote is yours.
