The Great Constituencies of Sectoria are located west of Australia, east of Madagascar, North-West of Lembrooke and south of India. It is commonly known as Sectoria, which has a population consisting of just under 264 million people.

The capital and the largest city is Staunton, with a population of roughly 7.6 million people.

History

No viable evidence has been discovered to prove that human life existed on Sectoria before the 5th Century. Historians believe that Sectoria was colonised by Roman stragglers near the end of the year 456 AD, one year after Rome had been "sacked" by rebels. Ancient ruins and artifacts indicate that these few settlers landed on the coast, of what is currently known as Staunton, where they established themselves by building a settlement.

By the year 512 AD, Staunton had grown into a small town, but no one had ever explored beyond the view of the settlement. This was until 513 AD where it is written that a small group of people had been exiled from the town for crimes such as stealing. The group apparently headed north, up the coast, where they finally settled and started building their own settlement which was named Thrace after a Greek/Barbarian civilisation which used to be an enemy to the Roman Empire. The citizens living in Staunton were obviously not amused with the name Thrace being given to a settlement in their new country, so relations between the towns deteriorated and a small civil war broke out in 516 AD. This civil war led to a line being drawn surrounding each town.

The year 714 AD ushered in an era of national peace between the towns after years of bloodshed. However, the lines which were created to seperate the tribes, were never removed therefore the towns still fended for themselves.

After years of exploration and expansion, towns started popping up all over Sectoria as far as the western coast. By 1302, trading relations with surrounding countries boomed building a strong national economy. Due to its convenient bay, Thrace and Phylingdon became the main epicenters for trade with Africa. Due to the Constituencies, other cities such as Staunton, were being left behind both technologically and economically. This lead to a mass migration of people to the North-West. Still being a rival city to Trace, Staunton used the little resources to construct and dig out an artificial bay to try to offer the perfect place for ships to dock. Surprisingly, this had great effects. Interested in the new development, businesses funded the project in return for the full use of the docks. By 1408, the docks had been completely finished, and soon the docks became burdened with a huge flow of marine traffic. However, they did not keep the bounty of the trading for themselves, Staunton set up its own Ministry of Trade which built roads connecting all major towns and cities with it to encourage national trade. For the first time since its establishment, the whole nation was working together peacefully.

Throughout the years, the nation was going through a time of growth. This was halted as trade only existed with nearby countries and there wasn't enough trade going on in order to provide for any major growth and it didn't have enough to build a military campaign against other countries to expand its territories.

In 1716, British explorers landed on Sectoria, but they were welcomed only with violence from the natives. The explorers were either killed, or forced to leave. The British retaliated with a large attack against Sectoria. Unable to compete against a force so large advanced, the Sectorian army was killed in battle. After a month, Sectoria surrendered.

Because Sectoria was now part of the British Commonwealth, railways, roads, hospitals, schools etc. were all built to provide for the people. Trading also took off with the rest of the world and with it, Sectoria was becoming an internationally renowned country thanks to its source rich environment. The lands continued to be exploited for its resources at an alarming rate, and a trail of destruction was being left behind by businesses who had torn up the natural landscape for these goods. Because of this in 1901, reservations were being set up in the places that were most beautiful and the lands which were worst hit.

During WWII, Sectoria played a role, as it supplied troops, aircraft and ships, to the on going battles in Africa and southern Europe. Sectoria's main job was to assist in the protection of the British colonies and to construct ships and aircraft to be used by the Allies. After the war, most Sectorians thought that they had earnt their independence from Britain. Surprisingly they were granted this right. To remember and appreciate where Sectoria got its power from, they continue to abide by traditional English values.

Government

There are three main political parties which operate within their elected constituencies or over the entire nation. At present, the Sectorian National Party (SNP) is in power. Led by Prime Minister Micheal Hope, they strive to maintain Sectoria's self preservation society. Their main economic policy and the most controversial, is to charge low import tariffs but to subsidies locally grown or manafactured goods, enabling national industries to expand quickly. There are many people who criticise this policy, but it stimulates the national economy without having to rely on an outside market.

The central parliament buidling is located in Staunton with constituency offices located along Sectoria Avenue. The central parliament building holds 340 seats, with every constituency building sheltering the equivelent of 120 seats each. With a constituency system, in order for a Prime Minister to be elected, they have to control more constituencies than any other party and have the most seats in Central Parliament.

Constituencies

Each constituency is run similar to its own independant country, however, Central Parliament still has total control over everything, so the party in power in parliament can overturn any decision made in the constituencies.

Military

Sectoria plays host to a very powerful military. The air force was created as a subdivision from the RAF in 1937 up until 1947. Sectoria helped devolop aircraft as well as being given state-of-the-art equipment in exchange making it one of the most modern air forces on Earth. From 1947, the government increased funding into military technology as well as build new aerodromes right across the country.

The Navy was just as important as the Air Force, being an isolated island, the country needed a way to transport large quantities of troops, weapons and needed enough fire power to protect naval convoys.

The Navy And Air Force compensates for the lack of army expertise. The land based army lacks the necessary discipline to be fully effective, and without it, military campaigns can be slow but unnecessarily destructive. Because of this, the military tends to stick with long lange ballistics weaponry and intelligence services to mark out targets.

The Sectorian Space Programme is currently developing aerospace defence weaponry. The first satellite developed by the Programme was the International Ballistics Satallite, codenamed "Black Moon." This was developed during the Hiigaran-Diesmaran war, to try to destroy incoming space vessels. Unfortunely the satallite failed due to unknown reasons, and missiles were launched into Hiigaran Cities, killing civilians. This had been covered up until recently, but an investigation is still pending. Experts blame the lack of proper space research and launching facilities.

Education

Secondary School Classroom, Middlewood

Education is similar to that in the United Kingdom. the education system is composed of 11 compulsery acedemic years (up to GCSE level) Where it is segmented into primary infant, primary junior and secondary schools. If the school offers it, or they go to college, students can carry on for another 2 more years for A and AS level for free. During this time, students can apply for an EMA (Education Maintenance Allowance) to earn up to £30 per week. After students reach past the age of 18, they have to pay for continued eductation (University, College etc.) Although some buisnesses offer "Graduation Schemes" where they sponser students to continue through education.

The Sectorian government is always trying to find ways to improve the educational system even further by introducing new laws and regulations for schools. An example of a new law passed by the Education Ministry is that "Every classroom must have a working Interactive Whiteboard present and every teacher must have sufficient knowledge to use one."

Energy

The country's main source of electrical energy is nuclear power, but other sources aid in providing energy for the national grid.

Cooling towers, Brenning Nuclear Power Station

The decision to create new nuclear power stations came after the "Great Energy Debate" which offered the final result that uranium is the only fuel to provide electricity safely and efficiently, for the most of the population. It was also decided that extra funding was needed for research into renewable alternatives.

There are several main energy suppliers in Sectoria, the biggest being Sectoria Energy. Other competitors include EFC, Central Power and Enigma Energy. Currently the energy market is oligopolistic, making it hard for others to enter it. This can be a good thing for customers as each firm needs to compete with each other, driving prices down. However there have been instances of price fixing. The largest instance of this happening was in 2003 when three energy providers collaberated their prices resulting in the closure of the Electricity supplier, Broadec Power, which used to be the third largest energy provider. The Sectorian National Energy Authority (SNEA) regulates energy providers to prevent price fixing from taking place. When the regulator was put in place, it was accused of being a socialist movement to prevent the progress of energy corporations, conversely, when the regulator was set up there hasn't been any more cases of monoloplistic collaberation.

Foreign Relations

Sectoria maintains close to average relations with most countries of the world but most notibally Hiigara, Coulla, Umbrosini and the UK. International relations especially took off once the country joined the Confederacy Of Free Regions, commonly known as COFR. Being with such a unified alliance means that Sectoria can perform all matters of trade with all member nations.

Sectoria was part of a dispute between Hiigara and the Diesmaran Empire, but recently the nation found itself unable to take any further military action due to its lack of a space fleet. However, Sectoria is playing a small role in extracting refugees back to Sectoria, but has concentrated most of its efforts in trying to contain the nuclear fallout from the aftermath of the Ion Cannon disaster.

Transportation

Being such a large country, a vast transportation network is an absolute necessity.

Railways

Sectorians have always been envious of Isambard kingdom Brunel's
TGV, Wexley Cross Station, Staunton
railways in Britain, and has used him as a rolemodel to construct a railway network nearly as great. After 1859, the only railway company in Sectoria at the time, Sectorian Rail, began planning the construction of over 98 912 km of railway. The construction of this railway stirred up interest with other transportation companies around the country, and soon others were either sponsering the great build, or constructing their own networks. By 1899, the network had been complete, this started a national tourism boom as amazed passengers were travelling to places they had never been before across the country, at a speed they could have only imagined until then.

Over the years the railways have grown more advanced, enabling the use of faster trains. The most used train for delivering passengers from one side of the country to the other, is the TGV. Most of the TGVs in Sectoria were imported from France in the early 1980s. However, it was soon discovered that the railways were far to old and meandering to introduce even faster bullet trains. Since then, construction for a new, stronger, straighter and more high powered line, is underway. To cope with new lines, Sectoria's busiest station, Wexley Cross, will recieve a large extension to cater for six new high speed lines. Wexley cross will be used as the major transport hub for not only Staunton, but for the entire south-western region of Sectoria.
