Race name: Troll, Ogre, Trow
Attributes:
Normal height ranges between three and nine feet. Trolls are usually either bald or covered by coarse, patchy clumps of hair, with mottled grey-green skin. They are coarse-featured, with lumpy faces and bodies. Most trolls have disproportionately long arms, usually reaching slightly past the knee when standing upright. Trolls have short claws on their hands and feet. Traditionally, trolls dress simply, wearing only a skin or hide loincloth, if anything at all. As a general rule, males are larger than females. Females usually have a tail, similar to that of a rat. Intelligence is usually low, but some examples display intelligence much greater than the norm.
History:
Trolls are beleived to share a common ancestor with gnomes and humans. Traditionally, they lived in wilderness areas, often near settlements but keeping themselves hidden. They would make their homes in deep woods, caves or similar places. They hunted animals for food if they had to, but preferred humans. Hunting methods varied- some preferred to sneak into settlements and steal prey, others would attack travellers, and some would use magic to disguise themselves as attractive humans, luring away the weak willed. They rarely took enough to cause suspicion, although there are some known examples of when trolls got greedy. Perhaps the most famous of these is the tale of Beowulf- greatly exaggerated and embellished over the centuries, but with a grain of truth at its centre. As human civilisation progressed and cities rose, while the rural population fell, troll activity decreased as they satisfied themselves with animals due to a lack of feasible human prey. A few trolls took up residence in these cities, abandoned buildings, sewer systems and subway tunnels proving near ideal places for troll habitation. Their attacks were usually unnoticed, their victims simply entering the missing persons list or, if remains were found, being mistaken for accidents or murder victims. Although humanity has been aware of trolls for centuries, beleiving them to be creatures of legend, they were only 'discovered' recently: the first troll to be found by the AoA was in Munich in 1957. Over the next half century, trolls have become more understood, and frequently documented, but they are still an uncommon sight within the AoA. Very few have joined, the vast majority preferring to continue their way of life.
Strengths:
High physical strength and endurance, slight resistance to temperature extremes, fast healing/regeneration of non-fatal wounds. Intelligent trolls are often able to use magic, especially illusions.
Weaknesses:
Usually unintelligent- the vast majority of trolls are stupid brutes. Damaged by sunlight, with prolonged exposure causing petrification. Most trolls do not use magic.
