You play as a Pianta/ Noki which you customize.

The game opens with the player waking up. He/ she walks outside, into their backyard. The garden is full of odd plants, but one stands out: a baby piranha. The player walks over to it, and a tanooki enters your garden. He is surprised to see the piranha and asks its name. You then name it, and the tanooki explains how to use it for battling, collect seeds, and gain its trust. The tanooki then says that he will bring over his piranha later, and leaves. You should then explore the town (Delfino Plaza). Once you are familiar with the Plaza, Go to the house next to yours. It has an orange roof shaped like a cone and big Brown doors. Inside, you find a green door. The house is empty, so enter the green door. It leads to a garden, and the tanooki is in it! He is next to a sleeping piranha. This one is in a flowerpot. Talk to the tanooki and he will explain that he was getting ready to come over but his piranha fell asleep! To wake him up, pick up a pineapple from the garden and feed it to the piranha. It will wake up! The tanooki takes it to your house and you, of course, follow. Mr. Tanooki will have his piranha fight yours. It does not matter if you win or lose, because either way you will receive a Piranha Pot at the end of the battle. This allows your piranha to level up, and it can now be carried with you. It is getting dark now, so have the player go to sleep. You wake up and leave your house. You may notice that since you got your piranha pot, several salesmen have appeared. Also, Nokis, Piantas, Tanookis, and Toads might want to battle you when you talk to them. If your piranha wins, you get some money, and occasionally an item. One of the piantas will give you soil. It is a little expensive, but buy it. There are several types and you should choose whichever one sounds best. The soil will make you piranha look cooler, and be more powerful. Also, it makes your garden bigger. Train your piranha until you are satisfied that he is powerful enough. Then visit the house of Mr. Tanooki. The inside is wrecked. A shelf has fallen over and several things are missing! Go into the garden. There you will find a criminal piranha making its escape! It will run through the plaza, so try to catch it! Once you do, it will start a piranha battle. If you lose, you will have to chase it again. Then, you will receive Sticky Soil. Go to sleep to start the next day. Wake up and leave your house. Walk around The Plaza and do whatever you want. After five battles, it will start to get dark. You can go to sleep, but you don’t have to. The next morning, the tanooki is waiting at your door. He will thank you for helping him, and asks you to help him again: go to the Pianta Village and rescue the piantas. The Pianta Village has been attacked by evil piranhas. He gives you a Ladder, which allows access to the Village. To go there, you must use the Ladder to climb the Shine Tower. At the top there is a pipe to enter. Pianta Village In the village, there are several four covered with odd, multicolored, ooze. They are throwing it all over the village, and Swoopin' Stus are attacking Piantas. To save the village, you must defeat all of the piranhas. To fight one, simply walk up to it. It will then start a piranha battle. After you defeat the piranhas, the Stus shouldn’t be a problem. You do not battle them, you just have to jump on them. The villagers will give you the item Key. Delfino Plaza You will appear on the tower. The Tanooki is standing on the shine sprite emblem in the plaza. Jump down from the tower and talk to him. He will congratulate you on the completion of your first mission, and explain how to use the Key. It allows you to access secret rooms in future missions. Go to sleep and start the next day. After the saving of Pianta Village, the police are starting to notice your skills with piranha battles. You get up and leave the house, and, as you walk through the town, you are stopped by a police pianta. He insists that you follow him to the shine gate. There, the pianta tells you that he wants you to help him with the law enforcement. He explains that piranhas were formerly completely evil. He says that he started a project to breed a reformed species of heroic piranhas. It was so successful that the piranhas were given to ordinary citizens, as friends, and self-defense. The best piranha battlers would get the opportunity to join the police. Of course, none of this was known to the general public. The pianta will then ask you: do you want do join?
