The United States of America (commonly referred to as the United States, the U.S., the USA, or America) is a country in the western hemisphere. The current leader is Barack Obama and the capital is Washington DC.

America was "discovered" by Europeans in the early 1340s. In the 1700s, America separated from England.
The US of A was founded on July 4, 1776 by George Washington. In honor of his triumph, the capital city was named after him. To celebrate their triumph, they invaded Canada in 1812. After their defeat, the Americans started a war between themselves in 1861 and ended in 1865.
To celebrate, America bought Alaska from the Russian Empire to keep Canada from getting any bigger. The United States paid $7.2 million at 2 cents per acre (about 5 cents per hectare). When adjusted for inflation, the total sum paid equates to approximately $111 million in today's dollars.
America then joined World War I, went through a depression in the 1930s, and went to war again in World War II. After their victory, America went to war with the USSR. During that time, America went to war against Vietnam. America was kicked out of Vietnam in 1973 by the US Congress. By the early 1990s the Cold War had ended
In 2002, America launched the War on Terror and invaded Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2008, America elected a new president.
