Burkina Faso has a conscript military open to both sexes, and has one of the highest female-to-male ratios in the world; it is estimated that females make up almost 40% of the military's components. The military is comprised of five branches: Army, Air Wing, National Gendarmerie, National Police, and People's Militia. The vast majority of its equipment (much of it becoming increasingly obsolete) is of Soviet origin, although much of its equipment comes from other former Warsaw Pact countries, as well. Captain Thomas Sankara, President of Burkina Faso, serves as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
