  • Crossness Southern Marsh (formerly Erith Marsh): Squacco Heron still present at the wader scrape at the western end of the marsh up to 21:15hrs at least (Birdguides) (Alan Lewis); also, 1 Little Egret but no sign of Purple Heron by 08:30hrs at least (John Archer). No sign of Purple Heron until dusk; pair of Stonechats and Chiffchaff also present (David Callahan).
  • Rainham Marshes RSPB: 22 Canada Goose, 40 Shelduck, 22 Mallard, 2m Garganey, Sparrowhawk, 2 Kestrel, 6 Little Grebe, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 23 Little Egret, Spoonbill still present up to 20.00hrs at least (Paul Hawkins), 19 Grey Heron, 2 Avocet, 30 Ringed Plover, 17 Lapwing, 15 Dunlin, 8 Redshank, pr Turtle Dove through, m Cuckoo, 3 Skylark, 3 Meadow Pipit, 6 Pied Wagtail, Stonechat, Lesser Whitethroat, 9 Common Whitethroat, pr Bearded Tit, 38 House Sparrow, 12 Reed Bunting,
  • Paddington Green: pr Goldfinch with 2 young (Des McKenzie).
  • River Thames, Tower Bridge: 12+ House Martins, Sand Martin (John Archer).
  • Wimbledon Common: Alas, the Tree Pipit that sang for three days appears to have moved on, but two pairs of Spotted Flycatcher are still present and a Skylark was up singing this morning (D Wills).
  • Canary Wharf: 2 Common Tern, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Mallard, all in the dock between CW & Heron Quay DLR stations (J Lethbridge)
  • WWT London Wetland Centre: Wader Scrape LR Plover(3 - 1 pair appear to be nesting again), Redshank (6 + 3 chicks), Main Lake - Lapwing (both nesting and with chicks); Common Tern (nesting) [Angus Innes]. Also an interestingly dark female-type Yellow Wag on the wader scrape (Jonathan Dean)
  • Hornchurch: Calling Whimbrel over at 10.57pm.(Dave Morrison)
  • Walthamstow Marshes: c20 House Martin, 12 Sand Martin, Lesser & Common Whitethroats feeding young (Mark Pearson)

May 30th 2007

  • Crossness: Squacco Heron still present on southern marsh (formely Erith Marsh) in trees by boating lake a.m. (Dave Lambert per Chris Langsdon); still present to 19:55hrs at least and back in the original area at the west end of Crossness Southern Marsh. From the A2016 take A2041 south to the first roundabout and take the 4th exit back north to the T-junction with Sewell Road and turn right; park on Belvedere Rd then walk past the boating lake (Southmere Lake) to the horse fields; cross the horse fields, keeping to the left side, until you reach a kissing gate; go through the gate and continue down the path for 150 yards to view the marsh from the screen hide adjacent to boardwalk (Birdguides/RBA etc). Purple Heron reported again in flight at 20:10hrs when it flew NE over western end of marsh, possibly landing in sewage works (per JA/DMc/RBA); at 21:00hrs the Squacco Heron, having been alarmed by a fox a few minutes previously, flew off strongly south over the boating lake and out of sight behind some trees (Dave de Silva).   • Rainham Marshes: 21 Little Egret, Spoonbill, pr Teal, 2m Garganey, singing Quail in out of bounds area, pr Bearded Tit (ELBF).
  • Tyttenhanger GP's: Little Stint, Common Tern (Birdguides/HertsBirding).
  • Walthamstow Res: Redshank, Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Cuckoos, c450 Swifts (David Callahan).
  • Alexandra Park: 150+ Swift, 1 Little Grebe Wood Green Res (Bob Watts).
  • London Wetland Centre: 7 Lapwing chicks (LWC website). One Common Sandpiper, pair Shelduck and juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker late pm (Martin Honey).
  • Beddington SF: Cuckoo (Dip or Glory).

May 29th 2007

  • Crossness Southern Marsh (formerly Erith Marshes): Squacco Heron and Purple Heron reported showing well, SW of A2016 at 2.30pm (RBA); Squacco showing extremely well both on the deck and in flight up to dusk at the 'wader scrape' at the west end of the marsh, no sign of Purple Heron, Gadwall with young, Barn Owl in the area, Redshank (Des McKenzie et al); 12 Little Egret west at 2030 (Bob Watts, John Archer).
  • Rainham Marshes RSPB: Spoonbill again at Aveley Pools, also m Teal, m Garganey still from visitor centre, 81 Ringed Plover, 2 Sanderling, 32 Dunlin, pr Bearded Tit (ELBF).
  • Beddington SF: Little Egret, Common Snipe, Common Sandpiper, 4 Yellow-legged Gull, Cuckoo (Dip or Glory).
  • Walthamstow Res: Little Egret, Garden Warbler singing, Red-legged Partridge, Cuckoo, Common Sandpiper, 2 Egyptian Geese, 75 Common Terns inc. one 1st summer, drake Shoveler (David Callahan).
  • Aldenham CP/Estate: 5 Mandarin, (1 drake & only 1 surviving young from 12), 6 Common Tern, 1 Skylark, 5 Common Whitethroat, a good number of Swift, Swallow and House Martin (Steve Blake).
  • Clissold Park: 3 House Martins, 2 Blackcaps, family party of Goldcrests, 2 Herring Gulls, pairs of Pochard, Little Grebe and Canada Goose all with broods of 3; also 2 Blackcaps, 1 Chiffchaff, 2 occupied GS Woodpecker holes in Abney PC, juv Goldcrests in garden (Mark Pearson).
  • Ingrebourne Valley: Little Owl (Shaun Harvey and Dave Morrison).

May 28th 2007

  • Queen Mother Resr: 13 Kittiwake flew south this morning; also Turnstone mid-morning (Birdguides).
  • Walthamstow Res: Brownish (immature, bit early?) Peregrine. Hundreds of Swifts & many Sand Martins low over water in light rain. Singing Lesser Whitethroat. A few Arctic Terns in with 50ish Common Terns on the Lockwood (Paul Whiteman).
  • Queen Elizabeth II Res: Ringed Plover, Common Sandpiper (SBC).
  • Crossness: Arctic Tern flew west @ 0840, 2 Turnstones briefly at outfall 0915, Peregrine, 3 Common Terns, 2 Oystercatchers, Cuckoo (John Archer).
  • Tyttenhanger GP's: Dunlin, Little Stint (HertsBirding).
  • Rainham RSPB: 2 Black Terns, 3 Arctic Terns, 2 Common Terns and a Grey Plover west along River Thames by 9.30. No sign of Spoonbill by 9.30am.(Les Harrison, Dave Morrison and Howard Vaughan); 13 Little Egret, m Garganey, 35 Ringed Plover, 18 Dunlin, Greenshank, Turnstone, 100 Swift, 70 House Martin (ELBF).
  • Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens: 69 Mute Swan, 57 Greylag Goose, 2 Red-crested Pochard, 10 Pochard, 5 Herring Gull, 12 Stock Dove, 5 Swift, 1 Pied Wagtail (Paul Bruty).
  • Beddington SF: Little Egret, 8 Ringed Plover flew west, Common Sandpiper, Common Tern (Dip or Glory).
  • Wimbledon Common: despite the appalling weather and an army of dog walkers, the Tree Pipit of the 26th is still present and continues to sing in what is a former breeding area, last bred in 1990. First breeding pair of Mute Swans for over 50 years (D Wills).
  • Ingrebourne Valley: pair Bullfinch, many Swift and House Martin, Garden Warbler, Cuckoo, 4 Gadwall and a Lapwing brood of 3 (Shaun Harvey and Dave Morrison).
  • Paddington Green: 4 'Commic' Tern high west at 13:17hrs, thought to be Arctic but ID not clinched (Des McKenzie).
  • Barnes WWT: 1 drake Shoveler, 24+ Gadwalls (90% drakes), 1 Dunlin, at least 5 Lapwings pairs incubating plus one pair with 1+ young, Redshank mobbing LBBGull so may still have young, no sign of LRP young but weather atrocious (Ian Bradshaw).
  • Staines Res: Drake Ferruginous Duck present this evening on the S basin. Same bird as on 14th. Close views showed it to have a little too much black on the bill tip to be considered a pure F Duck. It seems likely to be the long-term resident bird from E Berks, which is thought to be of captive origin and with some hybrid genes. Otherwise very quiet (Rob Innes, Ken Purdey).

  • Queen Mother Resr: Arctic Skua flew north late afternoon (Birdguides)
  • London Wetland Centre: 5 Tundra Ringed Plover, 3 Dunlin, 2 Turnstone present for 30 minutes (LWC website). Also, 1 Shelduck, 6 Little Ringed Plover (2 chicks), 6 Redshank (2 chicks), 3+ juv Pied Wagtail (Paul Bruty).
  • Tyttenhanger GP's: Oystercatcher, Ringed Plover, Little Ringed Plover, Dunlin, Little Stint, 4 Redshank with 3 fledged young (Birdguides/HertsBirding).
  • Rainham: Spoonbill still present to 1.45pm at least, drake Garganey, Greenshank (Matthew Palmer); Little Stint, Common Tern, 43 Arctic Tern, Tawny Owl, 2 Bearded Tit (ELBF);{Shaun Harvey} also, early a.m. 15 Arctic Terns up river at 06.03, Little Stint Sanderling, Grey Plover, 22 Ringed Plover and 15 Dunlin in one flock in the Bay, 200 Swift over marsh and Shelduck brood of 5 in Bay (Dave Morrison).
  • Crossness: Grey Plover off the outfall, 2nd summ Yellow-legged Gull off Golf Course, 3 Oystercatchers, 3 Lapwings, 2 Common Terns, Cuckoo (John Archer).
  • Beddington SF: 2 Shelduck, f Ruddy Duck, Common Sandpiper, 3 Yellow-legged Gull (Dip or Glory).
  • Queen Elizabeth II Res: Ringed Plover through early a.m., 2 Sanderling (SBC).
  • West Thurrock Marshes: Brood of 9 Shelduck ducklings (Dave Morrison).

May 26th 2007

  • Leyton: Red Kite soaring above the house for c10 minutes @ 11:30 (Paul Whiteman) Late report due to no broadband sorry!
  • Wormwood Scrubs: 3 Lesser Whitethroats, 2 Bullfinch (male feeding female) and 2 Swallows (feeding over meadow with swifts then flying north) (Steven Robinson).
  • Rainham Marshes: Spoonbill, Little Stint, drake Garganey, Greenshank, Turnstone, 2 Grey Plovers, 12+ Little Egrets, 3 Stonechats, 3 Cuckoos, Lesser Whitethroat, Kingfisher (David Callahan); also pair of Bearded Tit (Paul Hawkins, Shaun Harvey). And a female Yellow Wagtail (Andrew Thomas)
  • Kew Gardens: 1 male Garganey on the main lake (Thomas Galewski and Fred Veyrunes).
  • East India Dock NR: 1 Ringed Plover, 11 prs Common Terns, 1 Swallow, 3 Whitethroats.(Gary A James & Mike Messenger).
  • Wimbledon Common: singing Tree Pipit; 23rd Great Spotted Woodpeckers' nesting hole containing audible young (D Wills).
  • Dagenham Chase LNR: Buzzard / Honey Buzzard over at about 3.55 pm. Circling at a distance and flying away, always on flat wings. 5 singing Willow Warblers at least, 4 on Crowfoot Marsh and 1 in the old allotments. (Vince Halley-Frame). Could not access the site on Sat 26th.

  • Gillespie Road N5: Red Kite over west at 1900. (Peter Langsdon)
  • Addlestone: 14 Glossy Ibis flew east over the Addlestone Moor roundabout at 07:20 (Birdguides)
  • Rainham Marshes: 3 Spoonbills and Little Stint 0715 hrs at least (Howard Vaughan/Paul Hawkins per Dominic Mitchell). 2 Spoonbills flew strongly west at 8am; 1 still remaining. Little Stint also flown off (Howard Vaughan per David Bradnum)
  • Tower Bridge: ad Kittiwake over HMS Belfast drifting upstream with Black-headed Gulls at 0840 (John Archer).
  • Walthamstow Res: Peregrine (S), Hobby (N), Red-legged Partridge, Pheasant, Chiffchaff (David Callahan).
  • St Paul's Cathedral: two singing Reed Warblers 0730-0800 hrs (Reuben Braddock)
  • Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens: 4 Grey Heron, 10 Great Crested Grebe, 4 Red-crested Pochard (3m/1f), 1 Mandarin, 1 Gadwall, 10+ Pochard, 6 Stock Dove, 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Mistle Thrush, c.10 Swift, 2 Blackcap, 2 Greenfinch, 7 Chaffinch (singing) (Paul Bruty).
  • Lake Side, Oakwood, N14: Coal Tit, family party (1ad feeding 3 juvs); 1 singing male Goldcrest; 1 male Emperor Dragonfly (Robert Callf).
  • Trent Park Area: 1 Sparrowhawk; 1 Kestrel; 1 pr Great Spotted Woodpecker, feeding young in nest-hole ( 7th active nest-hole found this year - 5 Trent Park, 1 Parkside Farm, 1 Vicarage Farm) (Robert Callf).
  • Tower Hamlets Cemetery - breeding records - Long-tailed Tits (probably two pairs, one brood seen so far), Chaffinch (one male on territory), Blackcap (two males on territory), Dunnock (juvenile bird - probably one pair), Wren (at least 5 singing males), Stock Dove (pair earlier in year) (Bob Watts).
  • Enfield Town: 4(1 male, 3 juvs) Grey Wagtail,ad feeding young, New River at Southbury Road (Robert Callf).
  • Wimbledon Common: Spotted Flycatcher (D Wills)

May 24th 2007

  • Rainham Marshes: Spoonbill still present to 10:30hrs at least (Birdguides).
  • Beddington SF: 2 Shelduck, Ruff (Dip or Glory).
  • Paddington Green: singing Blackcap at 06.40hrs (first heard here this spring) (Des McKenzie).
  • Gardens around St Pauls: Acrocephalus warbler heard singing from 0810-0815 at least. Sounded too high pitch and lively for Reed, sounded most like Sedge. Brief view from c8m without binoculars made it look like small unstreaked Acrocephalus though. Also heard at 1120 (Gabriel Jamie).
  • Holland Park: singing Sedge Warbler, also 3-4 Blackcap, 2 Chiffchaff, singing Goldcrest (David Jeffreys).
  • Trent Park Area: 2 prs Little Grebe + 1 brood (5 young), 1 Kestrel, 2 prs Great Spotted Woodpecker, feeding young in nest-holes (4th & 5th active nest-holes for the Park this year), 4 Swallow, 2 singing male Lesser Whitethroat, 2 singing male Goldcrest, Williams Wood; 1 (f) Yellowhammer (Robert Callf).
  • Barnes WWT: LRPs still with 4 chicks, 6+ Blackcaps (Matthew Palmer)

  • Rainham Marshes: Spoonbill present to 08:20hrs at least (Birdguides); also Spotted Flycatcher (Ruth Barnes per Dominic Mitchell); also Turtle Dove thru, 5 Ring-Necked parakeet, 1 Cuckoo, 1 Greenshank, 15 Dunlin, 8 Ringed Plover, 2 Avocet, 8 Little Egret, Spot Fly and Spoonbill still early evening (Paul Hawkins); 22 Little Egret, ad Mediterranean Gull (ELBF).
  • Chobham Park: Honey Buzzard drifted NW at 14:25hrs (SBC).
  • Beddington SF: Shelduck, Red Kite, Ruff, Redshank (Dip or Glory).
  • Queen Elizabeth II Res: 22 Shelduck, 2 Ringed Plover, Sanderling, Common Sandpiper (SBC).
  • Totteridge Valley: Singing Sedge Warbler at Darlands Lake (site tick), 2 Mandarin ducklings (four on 20th but probably predated by Herons), Lesser Whitethroat (Ian Ellis).
  • Walton on the Hill: Red Kite west at 18:30hrs (SBC).
  • Paddington Green: vocal Common Tern south toward Paddington Basin at 08:10hrs and present at the basin to 11:25hrs at least (Des McKenzie).
  • Wormwood Scrubs: 1 female probable 'Greenland' Wheatear, 2 Spotted Flycatcher, 2 Jackdaw over, c2 Swallows through, a pair of Tufted Duck (a comparative rarity here!), c5 Lesser Whitethroat territories (adults seen with food), c5 Meadow Pipit territories, several Blackcap including 1 mimicking a Reed Warbler, 1 singing Garden Warbler & 2 Stock Dove (David Lindo & Roy Nuttall).
  • Parkland Walk, Finsbury Park end: 4 Jackdaws west (Gabriel Jamie).
  • Trent Park: 2 Lesser Whitethroat, near Cockfoster's entrance; 2 singing male Garden Warbler (1 near Oakwood entrance and 1 near Cockfoster's entrance); 2 singing male Willow Warbler, ( 1 near Triangular Wood; 1 Williams Wood) (Robert Callf).
  • Bankside: Wren feeding young (Alan Lewis).
  • Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens: Mute Swan (2 cygnets), 2cy Black Swan (esc), pr Mandarin, pr Gadwall, Mallard (brood of 6), m Red-crested Pochard, Great Crested Grebe (brood of 2), Coot (brood of 2), 2s type Great Black-backed Gull (Fisherman's Keep), Common Tern (moored boats to 13:30hrs at least), 3 Stock Dove (1 singing), 5+ Swift, 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker, c10 House Martin, singing Sedge Warbler (Police Station/Ranger's Lodge), 2m Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Long-tailed Tit (4 broods), 4 juv Magpie, good numbers of juv Starling (no count made), Common Blue Damselfly, 2 Small White, 2 Red Admiral, Holly Blue (Des McKenzie).
  • East India Dock NR: Mistle Thrush, Willow Warbler, 3+ Reed Warbler, m Reed Bunting, 16 Common Terns, 4 Sand Martin (Paul Hyland)
  • St James's Park: 3 Egyptian Goose, also GC Grebe down to 2 metres (Andrew Self)
  • Vicarage Farm and Parkside Farm, Enfield: 4 Little Grebe + 1 brood ( at least 4 young ); 1 pr Great Spotted Woodpecker, feeding young in nest-hole; 9 Stock Dove, together; 1 singing male Garden Warbler; 2(m+f) Broad-bodied Chaser; 2(m+f) Common Blue (Robert Callf).
  • Lake Side, Oakwood, N14: Long-tailed Tit, family party ( at least 2 juvs )(Robert Callf).

  • New Southgate: Hobby flying low over my garden, new record! (Tom Clarke).
  • Richmond Park: 2 (m) Northern Wheatears (1 at least a Greenland) at riding ring (Hugh Bradshaw)
  • Rainham Marshes: Red Kite through at 11.45am and Wood Sandpiper on new scrape in afternoon, but Spoonbill flew off in morning and again no sign of Cattle Egret (Ruth Barnes per Dominic Mitchell); Bearded Tit (ELBF); 16 Little Egret, Spoonbill relocated near information centre at dusk, 3 Oystercatcher, 19 Ringed Plover, 6 Dunlin, summer-plumaged Sanderling, 2 Whimbrel, Greenshank, Wood Sandpiper present toward dusk, Cuckoo, f Northern Wheatear (Des McKenzie, Dominic Mitchell).
  • Amwell GPs: Black Tern (Birdguides).
  • Walthamstow Res: (1720-1930) m Greenland Wheatear, Common Sandpiper, m Linnet, 93 Common Terns, 10 Shelducks, Kingfisher (David Callahan).
  • Forty Hall, Enfield: Spotted Flycatcher, 4 pr Swallows breeding, 10 Chiffchaffs, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, 1 Garden Warbler, 5 Blackcaps, 6 Willow Warblers (all singing), 8 prs Jackdaw (Mark Pearson).
  • St James's Park: 2 Egyptian Geese, also singing Reed Warbler (Andrew Self). Also brood of 12 red-crested pochards, 2 little grebes and flock of c15 long-tailed tits (Neil Millar).
  • London Wetland Centre: 2 Greenshank (SBC).
  • Laleham Park: 1 Common Buzzard over towards SE 12:45pm (David Combes).
  • Trent Park Area: 1(f) Whinchat, at Vicarage Farm; 1 pr Great Spotted Woodpecker feeding young (3rd active nest-hole found here this year); 4 Little Grebe with 1 brood; 1 Kingfisher; 1 Cuckoo; 1 singing male Garden Warbler, 1 singing male Lesser Whitethroat; 1 Red-legged Partridge; 1 singing male Willow Warbler near Triangular Wood (Robert Callf).
  • Beddington SF: m Cuckoo (Dip or Glory).
  • Queen Elizabeth II Res: up to 20 Sanderling including flocks of 9 and 3 through early morning and 11 present during afternoon, Little Gull, Black Tern, 2 Northern Wheatear (SBC).
  • Walton Res: 2 Common Sandpiper, Little Gull, Black Tern (gull and tern same as QEII Res birds) (SBC).

  • Barbican Centre EC1: 1 Grey Heron, 9 Mallard, Coot brood (2) (Paul Bruty)
  • Pymmes Park, Edmonton: 1 Little Grebe; 1 male Pochard; 1 male Grey Wagtail, nearby in Pymmes Brook (Robert Callf).
  • Walton Res: 1s Little Gull (SBC).
  • Queen Elizabeth II Res: 2 Dunlin (SBC).

  • Queen Elizabeth II Res: m Common Scoter, 2 Avocet flew in at 06:12hrs, Sandwich Tern between 05:34hrs and 07:00hrs (SBC).
  • London Wetland Centre: Little Ringed Plover pair now with a brood of 4 (LWC website).
  • Walton Res: 2 Avocets on the causeway (same as the QEII Res birds), 1s Little Gull (SBC).
  • Chepstow Road, W2: Female Northern Wheatear at 1pm down to 12 inches through back window perched on mini football goal in tiny concreted back garden!! Was it the same one at the Cup Final yesterday? (David Lindo).
  • Rainham Marshes RSPB:11:35 Cattle Egret on Aveley Marsh (Paul Whiteman per Howard Vaughan); Spoonbill still present, 7 Little Egrets, 3 Oystercatchers, Northern Wheatear, Garden Warbler (Dominic Mitchell); also f Marsh Harrier seen, Golden Plover (Des McKenzie); also 17 Little Egret, f Common Scoter, 2 Hobby, 30 Dunlin, 3 Whimbrel, 4 Greenland Wheatear, 4 Grasshopper Warbler (ELBF).
  • Theydon Mount: m Yellowhammer (ELBF).
  • Alexandra Park: Red Kite flew SSW over cricket pitch 0913-0918, Common Sandpiper filter beds/Wood Green Res (1st for year & 100th site species), 3 Jackdaw (Andrew Gardener & Bob Watts).
  • Brent Res: Turtle Dove north at 08.00, also LRP & 2 Lapwings (Andrew Self), Hobby, 2 LRPs 12 noon (Roy Beddard)
  • Wormwood Scrubs: 1, perhaps 2, Spotted Flycatcher, 1 singing Sedge Warbler, 2 singing Lesser Whitethroat, c2 Swallow, c13 Jackdaw over & 3 Collared Dove (David Lindo & Roy Nuttall).

  • Alexandra Park: Reed Warbler NE corner football pitches found 10am (Andrew Gardener) and still present but virtually not vocal at 1630 (Bob Watts) - 1st for site this year; also, 3 Swallows, 10 Swifts, 25 House Martins.
  • Regents Park: 2 Bar-tailed Godwits flew SE over the lake at 7.30am, just above tree height, 2 Common Terns perched on boats 6.30am-815am, 2 Swallows (Tony Duckett).
