Monday 7th September

  • Wanstead Flats pm: 7 Spotted Flycatchers, 1 imm Redstart, 3 Whinchat, 8 Blackcap, 1 Hobby over (S Fisher)
  • Rainham Marshes RSPB: Marsh Harrier, 2 Hobbies, 3 Whinchat, 20+ Swallows (heading south in small groups) and 3 Sand Martin (Steven Robinson).
  • Crossness: 2 Garganey on the lagoon, m Dartford Warbler still in weeds 30m east of the lagoon viewing screen. Whinchat, Stonechat, 2 Sedge Warblers, Kingfisher, 7 Black-Tailed Godwits, (Kev Jarvis & I.Miller)
  • Alexandra Park: no sign of Alpine Swift so far this a.m. (Birdguides); very brief Nightingale flushed from base of sapling in scrub 20 to 25 feet along middle path just before Dogwood clumps, disappearing into deep cover just south of racetrack; also calling Jackdaw, Swallow south, Lesser Whitethroat, 5 Willow Warblers, 3 Chiffchaffs, 5 Whitethroats, 3 Blackcaps (David Callahan); Common Tern & Kingfisher WG Res (Bob Watts); Male Redstart in cricket scrub late morning (Gareth Richards per Bob Watts & Dominic Mitchell); 3 Common Terns (2 juvs) WG Res, 4 Swallows south, 20+ House Martins (DC & DM).
  • Stoke Newington Reservoirs: 15+ Chiffchaffs (including one bird s.c.o. abietinus, calling and responding to MP3 as such, plus several others uttering the odd juv call), 10 Willow Warblers, 2 Spotted Flycatchers, Garden Warbler, Reed Warbler (all the above along the New River path / around the LWT garden, some warblers in song). c20 House Martins, 15 Sand Martins and 3 Swallows; Kingfisher, singing Blackcap; Meadow Pipit over. up to 12 Willow Warblers & 8-10 Chiffchaffs late eve.   • Wormwood Scrubs: 2 Whinchat, c7 Whitethroat, Blackcap, 13 Meadow Pipit, 2 Jackdaw & 3 Egyptian Goose. (Mathew Bournat & David Lindo).
  • Brent Res: Whinchat on dump teazels after heavy shower, Hobby perched, Whitethroat, Reed Warbler, 6 Chiffchaffs, 4 Blackcaps, 6 Swallows, 40+ House Martins, 20+ Sand Martins; also Green Sand, Common Sand, Lapwings and still 12 Common Terns (Andrew Verrall); Spot Fly on school hedge late afternoon (Andrew Self)

Sunday 6th September

  • Alexandra Park: Alpine Swift found by Gareth Richards & still over Filter Beds (SE corner of Park) at 4.30pm (thanks from all of APOG - J. Murray); also 2 Yellow Wagtail, 7 Mipits, Willow Warbler with 5+ Chiffchaffs in hedge adjacent to W G Res (Bob Watts); also Hobby, Common Tern, House Martins (James Palmer).Flew high east 1830 (Bob Watts per Gareth Richards), Swifts reported by others.
  • King George V Res: probable Citrine Wagtail along causeway along North Basin side a.m. (Birdguides); 1st-winter Yellow Wagtail along causeway, also 3 adult Yellow Wagtails, 2 alba wagtails, 30+ Pied Wagtails, 1 Redstart, 1 Whinchat & 3 Northern Wheatear (J. Murray).
  • Beddington SF: Dunlin, 8 Green Sandpiper, Meadow Pipit, 2 Whinchat, 6 Northern Wheatear (Dip or Glory).
  • Brent Res: Tree Pipit again in shrike field, also Little Egret on raft, Yellow Wagtail over & Green Sand (Brent Birders); male Wheatear in the shrike field @ 13:15 (Thom Shannon).
  • London Wetland Centre: 44 Gadwall, 20 Teal, 65 Shoveler, fem Sparrowhawk, 2 Kestrel, 2 Hobby, Swallow NW, 25 House Martin, 2 Blackcap, 9 Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler (LWC website).
  • Ruislip Woods/Lido: 2 Redstarts, 78 Mute Swan, 21 Pochard, Spr'awk, 7 Swallow, 6 House + 1 Sand Martin, 5+ Chiffchaff, 2 Blackcap (Neil Anderson).
  • Aldenham Res: no sign of yesterday's Alpine Swift (Birdguides) as it is now at Ally Pally.
  • Tyttenhanger GPs: 2 Ruddy Shelduck (Birdguides).
  • East India Dock area: 3 adult Yellow-legged Gulls (2 Trinity Buoy Wharf), 3 Chiffchaffs (inc a "whistling" juv), 13 Common Terns (mostly juvs, south), 10+ Reed Warblers, Whitethroat, 23 Teal, 2 Sparrowhawks, Common Sandpiper (David Callahan).
  • Ingrebourne Valley: 2 male Common Redstarts, Sedge Warbler, 2 Reed Warbler, 8 Chiffchaff, 3 Whinchat, 3 Tree Pipits, Kingfisher, 2 Little Egrets, 9 Common Whitethroats, Lesser Whitethroat, 5 Blackcap, 70 Linnet on tip, 11 Shoveler over, 37 Meadow Pipits over and 15 Swallow (Dave Morrison).
  • Wanstead: juv Hobby low over my garden at 11:55am then circled over Bush Wood and lost to view east (J Lethbridge).
  • Oakwood Park, N14: 1 male Great Spotted Woodpecker; 1 Grey Wagtail, flew over calling; 2+ Song Thrush; 1 Mistle Thrush; 2 (ad,1st-winter) Spotted Flycatcher, together, possibly another two 1st-winters in different areas; 2 fem/imm Blackcap, together; 1 Chiffchaff; 1 Willow Warbler; 1 Nuthatch (Robert Callf).
  • Crayford Marsh: Cetti's Warbler, 8 Yellow Wagtails, Yellow-legged Gull, 3 Greenshanks, 5 Little Egrets, 20 Ringed Plovers, 10 Dunlin, 2 Redshanks, 8 Swallows, 30 House Martins (Kev Jarvis & P. Grin).
  • Tottenham Marsh: 2 Whinchats, 1 imm Reed Bunting on Clendish Marsh near allotments (Quentin Given).
  • Dagenham Chase LNR: 2 Yellow Wagtail, 2 Whinchat, 1 Wheatear, 3+ Lesser Whitethroat, 2+ Common Whitethroat, 1 Little Egret over, 1 Green Sandpiper & 56 Lapwing. Lancaster Bomber over at 3.40 pm. (V.Halley-Frame).
  • Regent's Park: Peregrine 12.00pm, 2 Hobby's 12.10pm, 5 Meadow Pipits (Tony Duckett).
  • Paddington Green: 2 Grey Wagtail, Lancaster Bomber showed well (Des McKenzie).
  • Wormwood Scrubs: 2 Whinchat, 1 Common Tern - our 1st September record ever, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, c10 Whitethroat, c5 Blackcap, c5 Chiffchaff, c4 Swallow, c10 Meadow Pipit & 2 Stock Dove. (David Jeffreys, David Lindo & Roy Nuttall).
  • Staines Res: c.1000 House Martins, c.500 Swallows through during afternoon, also 7-9 Swifts, Black-necked Grebe, Dunlin, Ringed Plover, 3 Common Sandpipers, Wheatear and Whinchat (Pete Naylor).
  • Amwell GP: Little Egret, 4 Hobby, 2 Green Sandpiper, Common Sandpiper, singing Cettis Warbler (HertsBirding).
  • Hampstead Heath: highlights from Heath & Hampstead Soc guided walk (1030-1300) were 1x Spotted Flycatcher, 2x Hobby (Sash Tusa)
  • Osterley Park, 2pm. Hobby, Little Owl, 2 x Kestrel, 2 x Swallow. (Michael F)

Saturday 5th September

  • Aldenham Res: Alpine Swift still at 7.15pm, viewable from the dam. ( R B A ).
  • Beddington SF: 5 Common Buzzard, Hobby, Greenshank, 16 Green Sandpiper, 2 Common Sandpiper, 2 Tree Pipit, 22 Meadow Pipit through, 2 Yellow Wagtail, 3 Northern Wheatear, Raven low over, mobbed by Carrion Crows, possibly went east (Dip or Glory).
  • Springfield Park, Hackney: 2 Pied Flycatchers, 6+ Spotted Flycatchers, 2 Tree Pipits, 15 Meadow Pipits, 8 Willow Warblers, 3 Chiffchaffs, 5 Goldcrests, 35 Chaffinches, 4 Coal Tits, 2 Hobbys (Mark Pearson - photos on site later Hackney Wildlife); also Common Buzzard over Clapton Pond 1208, probably same as Regents Park bird (JP per MJP)
  • Brent Res: Grasshopper Warbler flushed on north bank, also Tree Pipit there, 3 Yellow Wagtails & 6 Meadow Pipits flew south, 2 Swifts, 22+ Chiffchaff, 9 Blackcaps, 5 Whitethroats & Sedge Warbler (Brent Birders)
  • Wormwood Scrubs: 2 Northern Wheatear, 1 juvenile Hobby, c6 Blackcap, c5 Chiffchaff, 1 Whitethroat, 2 Stock Dove & 3 Jackdaw. (David Lindo & Roy Nuttall).
  • Wanstead Flats (and Park area): 3 Spotted Flycatchers, 2 Northern Wheatear, 2 Whinchat, 10 Yellow Wagtails over, 3 Grey Wagtails, 10 Meadow Pipits, 2 Common Sandpipers, 1 Little Egret, 1 Tree Pipit, 15 Chiffchaff, 3 Willow Warbler (S Fisher)
  • Alexandra Park: drake Gadwall, Hobby, four Common Terns S, three Swallows N, seven Meadow Pipit SW from 7-9.25am, Tree Pipit just north of cricket scrub 7.15am, one Yellow Wagtail W at 7.29am and three briefly on cricket pitches at 9.25am, single Whinchat, Lesser Whitethroat and Spotted Flycatcher in cricket scrub, and two Jackdaws flew in from NE and landed west of the cricket pitches at c 8.50am (Bob Watts, Gareth Richards, Dominic Mitchell). Trickle of Mipit passage just south of site over Nightingale Lane including mid pm (Bob Watts).
  • Paddington Green: Hobby SW c09:00hrs, Grey Wagtail (Des McKenzie).
  • Dartford Marshes: 3 possibly 4 Greenshank, Green Sandpiper, 2 Common Sandpiper, ad Yellow-legged Gull, 3 Whinchat, 2 Northern Wheatear, 4 Stonechat, Spotted Flycatcher (Jim Spooner).
  • Richmond Park: Northern Wheatear, Willow Warbler, Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Whitethroat, 7 Chiffchaff, 3 Blackcap all in Hawthorn Valley; 2 Yellow Wagtails & 3 Mpipits over. 2 Little Owl at Holly Lodge (J.Murray & J.Murray Snr).
  • Osterley Park: Spotted Flycatcher, 4 Reed Bunting, Willow Warbler (Tom Smith).
  • Regent's Park: Common Buzzard north at 11.45am, Swift, Tree Pipit, 3 Meadow Pipits, 2 Spotted Flycatchers, 2 Willow Warblers, 25 Chiffchaffs (including one of the race abietinus), 3 Blackcaps (Tony Duckett).
  • Crossness: Garganey on the Great Breach Lagoon, 2 Whinchats, 1 Stonechat, 5 Black-tailed Godwits, 3 Oystercatchers, c35 Lapwings, 3 Redshanks, 4 Common Sands, Sparrowhawk.(Kev Jarvis).

  • Perivale Wood: Spotted Flycatcher (David Howdon)
  • Finchley: Hobby flew W over Ballards Lane, made unsuccessful attempt to catch a small passerine, c12:30, also a few Meadow Pipits overhead (Ian Ellis).

  • King George V Res (permit access only): Shag again at south end of north basin at 06:45hrs (J. Murray).
  • Hackney, Lea Bridge Road: Osprey very low and SW at 0830 (Jamie Partridge per MJP Hackney Wildlife)
  • Hackney Marshes: Marsh Harrier south, in from over Walthamstow Marsh, 0950 (Jamie Partridge per MJP)
  • Beddington SF:Wood Sandpiper, Greenshank, 15 Green Sandpiper, 3 Common Sandpiper, ad Yellow-legged Gull, Common Tern, Tree Pipit (Dip or Glory).

  • Alexandra Park: Yellow Wagtail, Mipit (1st of autumn), 4 Swallows SE @ 0720 (Bob Watts); 2-3 Whitethroats, 8-10 Blackcaps, singing Chiffchaff, Ring-necked Parakeet [all in or over "cricket scrub"] (David Callahan); 2 juv Swallows, Sand Martin, 15+ House Martins at 11:40 (Birdwatch staff).
  • Crayford Marsh: Cetti's Warbler in bushes near Erith Yacht Club, 5 Greenshanks, Curlew, 12 Ringed Plovers, 3 Redshanks (all on Thames foreshore); 5 Sand Martins, 20 House Martins, 16 Swallows, 2 Stonechats, 2 Jackdaws (Kev Jarvis).
  • Willows Farm: Little Ringed Plover, 4 Yellow Wagtail, 2 Wheatear, Whinchat (Steve Blake).
  • Minet CP: female-type Common Redstart showing well in the southwest corner late morning TQ109797 (Birdguides).
  • Bankside: 2 Mute Swans heading downstream 13.35pm (Alan Lewis).
  • London Wetland Centre: Garganey still this morning; also female-type Redstart and 2 Yellow-legged Gulls (Birdguides).
  • Saxon Lake: 2 Gt C Grebes, 2 Little Grebes, 30+ Pochards, 2 M Swans + 4juv, 19 Tufted Ducks, 5 House Martins flew over, 1 R N Parkeet (Sue Giddens).
  • Dagenham Chase LNR: 1 Green Sandpiper on the slack, a few Blackcaps, Chiffies & a Lesser Whitethroat (V.Halley-Frame); Little Owl (Dave McGough & VH-F).
  • Ingrebourne Valley: Turtle Dove (Dave Morrison per VH-F).
  • Mayesbrook Park: 2 Kingfisher, Swift, 4 House Martin, 6 Sand Martin, Swallow, 2 Chiffchaff (Paul Hawkins).
  • Hampstead Heath: 3 Hobby hunting dragonflies [1], adult Tawny Owl on ground in daylight (mobbed by Blackbird, Jay, Song Thrush) also pair calling in daylight, 5 Jackdaws, 1 Nuthatch, 1 Chiffchaff, Mute Swans with 9 cygnets [2]. (Michael Mac).
  • Barking: Hobby from front room window (Paul Hawkins).

  • KGV Reservoir (permit only): imm Shag at south end of north basin late evening, plus juv Black-necked Grebe on south basin, 7 Common Sandpiper and 500+ Swallow. (David Bradnum)

  • London Wetland Centre: 54 Gadwall, 16 Teal, 4 Garganey (Main Lake in front of WWF hide), 66 Shoveler, m Sparrowhawk (perched on top of Sand Martin bank)and reservoir lagoon, fem Kestrel (LWC website).
  • Beddington SF 2 Tree Pipit (JA/FP), 1 Wood Sandpiper (JA), 1 Greenshank, 17 Green Sandpiper, 5 Common Sandpiper, 11 (10 ad, 1 juv) Common Tern flew SE in one flock (Beddington Farm Bird Group).
  • Bed SF: Wood Sand still, 1 Greenshank (DKC,KJM).
  • Crossness: male Dartford Warbler in low weeds in southwest corner of construction compound and viewable from adjacent fields; 1 Wheatear and 1 Whinchat in paddocks, 8 Sand Martins and 4 Swallows through, 3 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 adult Yellow-legged Gulls, 35+ Common Terns, 2 Common Sandpipers, 5 Redshanks, 150+ Teal (John Archer, Ian Miller & Kev Jarvis).
  • Euston: Swift over 12:50hrs (Des McKenzie).

Wednesday 2nd September.

  • Wanstead Flats: 1 Tree Pipit, 5 Whitethroat, 1 Blackcap, 1 Spotted Flycatcher, 1 imm/fem Redstart, 2 Whinchat (S. Fisher)
  • Brent Res.: 3 Green Sand, 1 Common Sand, 3 Lapwing, 1 Dunlin, 1 Wigeon, 25+ Common Terns, 20+ House Martin, 4 Blackcap, 2 Lesser Whitethroat, 12+ Chiffchaff, 1 ad. male Common Redstart (50m before hide) (Roy Beddard); 1 Little Egret (Brent Birders).

  • Ingrebourne Valley: 2 possibly 3 Pied Flycatchers. 2 from viewing area, 1 near burnt area. Also 1 Garden Warbler & 22 Blackcaps in a single bush ! ( Steve Smith per V H-F ).

  • Regent's Park: Sand Martin, 3 Swallows, 15 House Martins, 3 Willow Warblers, 8 Chiffchaffs, after a brief stroll (Tony Duckett).
  • Hampstead Heath: 3 Hobby, 1 Kingfisher, Hampstead Pond No 1: Lesser Black- backed Gull maurauding pair Great Crested Grebe with 3 small young, 2 male + 1 female Gadwall, brood 9 full grown Mute Swan cygnets with adults, 2 Tawny Owl calling seperate locations (Michael Mac).
  • South Norwood CP: fem Sparrowhawk seen briefly as it dashed out of cover to chase a Long-tailed Tit (CroydonBirders).
